This week we honor Indigenous Peoples' Day.  

A national holiday celebrated in 15 states, replacing Columbus Day.

In 1977 it first was proposed at the United Nations International Conference on Discrimination against Indigenous Populations in the Americas. South Dakota became the first state to rename Columbus Day in 1990.

In 1986, Phil Stevens visited his homeland of Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. He'd read about how in 1969 Native Americans had taken over Alcatraz Island to protest generations of injustice. He founded Operation Walking Shield to help American Indians rebuild their hopes, their dreams, and their dignity and improve their quality of life.
