Principal's Snapshots

This year, our STEM 1 class competed in the OC Maker Challenge and we had five groups move on to the finals at Chapman University.  One of our groups, who designed and built The Battery Board (a skateboard that turns kinetic energy into electrical energy to charge your electronics while you ride), won the Most Innovative Product for Middle School award and a $150 prize.  They were recognized out of over 200 student teams from across Orange County middle, high school and community colleges.  This group included Ryan Miller, Collin Phillip, Ian StaAna, Nathan Aranda, and Brandon Wachner.  They collaborated seamlessly and worked diligently to design and build their winning product.

The event delivers an authentic experience and creative environment combining STEM technologies, art and design within a culture of inquiry.  Congrats to our Highlanders!

Our AVID students enjoyed their field trip to Cal State Fullerton last Thursday...and even met Tuffy the Titan.

Leadership/Yearbook students and Mrs. Gonzalez put together an amazing snack and coffee cart for teacher appreciation week. Mr. Kilian and the team served the teachers at their rooms for a nice Friday treat. The students ran a smooth operation while delivering!

Mr. Weber is shown here explaining Mechanical Advantage and Efficiency while setting up a future lab...students were all in!

The productive struggle in math sometimes leads to a smile.... Students here worked to decode various symbols acting as variables, working backward to determine their value.

Here students work with Mrs. Espinosa to compare and contrast various triangle and rhombus elements visible in the kites designed in class (also hanging from the ceiling. The student discussion were rich with keen observations, vocabulary, and written reflections in conclusion were quite articulate.

Not Using All Those Mixed Up Legos Anymore?
Lets Donate Them to Kids in Need!

It's easy:

1) You do not have to sort your legos or have complete sets

2)   Just put all the legos you wish to donate in a bag or box

3)   Email samkubaska@gmail.com to arrange for pick up at your convenience, or drop them off at 12842 Barrett Ln, Santa Ana, June 1st-3rd

4)   We will package all Legos and send to BrickRecycler.com

Here is an excerpt from their website:

We have many more requests for LEGOs than we can fill right now.  And we receive new one-time requests constantly.  One request is from someone in the army, stationed in Honduras. We will be sending him some Legos for the troops and local kids to enjoy. Another example is many pounds of used pieces to bless children at an  orphanage in Zimbabwe .  We also teamed up with Compassion International to help children in Brazil, sent toys to children in Flint Michigan, and provided building supplies to a nonprofit science program for teens

Their website explains how legos never decompose in a landfill, and are often thrown away by thrift stores as they can't confirm sets are complete for sale. Let's put those used legos to good use!
