Cara Kelly On September 10, Cara defended her doctoral dissertation at the ASU School of Social Work. Her research examined the utility of the Healthy Families Parenting Inventory (HFPI) to predict a family’s risk for future maltreatment. Our Board of Directors gladly congratulates Cara in becoming Dr. Kelly!

"I was raised by a social worker, so naturally, discussions surrounding our responsibilities in working towards social justice were incorporated into our household from a very young age. I believe that people can change, and as a social worker I am often in the position to guide and facilitate these changes in a family’s life. Every time I’m able to help a parent better understand the needs of their child, connect them to a community resource to better support their family, or empower them to make decisions to keep their children safe and protected, I’m making a difference with the potential to last a lifetime.  Moving forward in my career I hope to continue my work in risk assessment, in assisting professionals who come into contact with at-risk families make the best possible decisions in order to keep children safe and protected. By assisting social work practitioners and the community in identifying at-risk families before they come into contact with the public child welfare system, we have an opportunity to alter a family’s trajectory away from abuse and neglect, towards more positive parenting practices over time.   Prevention is key!" Honoring the Volunteers Who Spread Hope

On September 27, a group of volunteers were celebrated at Prevent Child Abuse Arizona for their extensive volunteer efforts over the years. In the past two years, our volunteers have contributed an impressive: 2017: 635.75 hrs = 12.23 hrs/wk 2018 to date: 1,202.25 hrs = 30.83 hrs/wk  The notable increase in volunteer hours in the past year has inspired YFAC staff to demonstrate their appreciation through making a colorful handmade gifts. Director, Missy Sikora, designed white-washed wooden planks each featuring their own unique quote about service, then adorned with charms. Missy utilized this as a team bonding opportunity, where all of the various staff gathered together to each play a part in recognizing volunteers. "The highest of distinctions is service to others."
