Rosen Legacy Gift: A Story from the Vault

As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we’re reflecting on some of the transformational gifts that have shaped our work. One such milestone came in 2009, when we received the largest gift in our then 10-year history.

Dr. Bernard Rosen and his wife, Shirley, thoughtfully included a philanthropic bequest in their estate plan after consulting with their legal advisors. Their generosity established the Bernard and Shirley Rosen Fund, dedicated to supporting 33 libraries in the Finger Lakes Library System.

Their vision was clear: to expand access for youth, encouraging teens to visit, study, and read at libraries during evenings and weekends. Grants from the fund have provided books, resources, and opportunities otherwise unavailable in these communities.

Since its inception, the Rosen Fund has made a lasting impact:

📚 Total Grants Awarded: $2,056,371

From A (Aurora Free Library) to W (Weedsport Free Library), the Rosen's legacy continues to enrich our region.

A Gift for Today and Tomorrow:

Yohko Tsuji Story

Dr. Yohko Tsuji understands that philanthropy is not just about the present—it’s about shaping the future. Through her generosity, she has established two funds that will make a lasting impact, both today and for generations to come.

The Kirsch-Tsuji Cornell Anthropology Graduate Students Endowment Fund, is ensuring that Cornell anthropology graduate students receive essential support in perpetuity. This fund reflects her deep commitment to education and the advancement of future scholars.

At the same time, the Kirsch and Tsuji Community Endowment Fund will provide ongoing resources to the Community Foundation today, helping to improve the quality of life in Tompkins County. This fund enables flexible, responsive grantmaking to address evolving community needs.

By giving both now and for the future, Yohko’s generosity will have a lasting influence—empowering students and strengthening the community for years to come.

Honored by the Legacy of Reverend G. Eugene and Mary Porter Durham

In 1918, Rev. Eugene “Gene” Durham and Mary Porter Durham’s met as Cornell University students. Upon graduation, their legacy of service and generosity began when Gene served as Cornell’s Methodist Chaplain, a role in which he and Mary ministered together for 19 years while raising their three children, including their son David Durham.

Beyond their work at Cornell, Gene and Mary were deeply engaged in the Ithaca community. Both were active Ithaca Rotarians, and Gene also served as the hospital chaplain. “My parents were devoted to peace, justice, and fighting racism and poverty,” said son, David.

Mary, a passionate advocate for women’s issues, dedicated her time at church, to PEO and other women’s organizations. In a remarkable act of generosity, at her death and with her children, a downtown Ithaca house was gifted to the Women’s Opportunity Center (WOC) and in her memory named, the Mary Durham Boutique.” For over two decades, the nonprofit had a rent-free home as a vital resource for women seeking job training in retail and customer service. In 2024, the boutique closed its doors, a ripple effect of the pandemic, marking the end of an era.

With the house now vacant, Sarah Johnson, WOC Board Chair, approached David with an idea: continue the Durham family’s commitment to philanthropy and alleviating tax concerns by donating the house proceeds to the Community Foundation.

David embraced the idea,Meeting staff members, George and Nancy, I learned about the 1,800 community foundations worldwide. The Community Foundation’s mission, transparency and their trustworthiness made the it the perfect choice to ensure my family’s philanthropic spirit lived on.”

In December 2024, at the house closing, two endowment funds were created:

  • Gene and Mary Durham Community Foundation Fund

  • Gene and Mary Durham Women’s Opportunity Center Fund

Thank you to Sarah, David, the Durham family, and all those who champion our community.

How Cool are these: Messages from a Grantee and Donor

How does the Community Foundation benefit the area? With:

  • Opportunities to Engage
  • Grants to Multiple Organizations
  • Helpful Educational Meetings

"I submitted a grant proposal and received not only a detailed written response to my application, but a phone call from a grant reviewer assigned to learn more about my request. It was not your average proposal that you simply wait for a yes or no and move on. The Foundation truly cares about organizations and needs. " Local Grantee

"I support the Community Foundation of Tompkins County because of its deep commitment to fostering a thriving, inclusive, and resilient community. By connecting donors with meaningful causes, investing in local nonprofits, and promoting trust-based philanthropy, the foundation plays a vital role in addressing urgent needs and creating lasting impact. I’m proud to support an organization that strengthens our community through generosity and collaboration." Local Donor
