When you picture a woman who accesses the Sonshine Centre's shelter suites, who do you see? Does she come from poverty or wealth? What color is her skin? How old is she?
While domestic violence disproportionately affects certain groups, it knows no bounds. Anyone can be impacted by domestic violence and abuse, and the women we meet at Sonshine come from every imaginable background and circumstance.
The 2022 theme for International Women's Day (March 8th) is Break the Bias, a call to action for a gender equal world "free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination; a world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive; a world where difference is valued and celebrated."
We all play a role in creating this world: we can role model and promote healthy relationships, we can challenge gender stereotypes, we can promote inclusive practices, and we can build a culture of consent. Take time this International Women's Day to celebrate the women in your life and challenge your own assumptions!
Here's to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.
