DID YOU KNOW...
…that a flock of Wild Turkeys has been foraging around Roper Mountain since the January snowstorm? Sights like these are most common during the fall and winter months. Our Chestnut Oaks stands provide mast–such as acorns–their primary winter food source. In the winter, Wild Turkeys feed heavily on acorns to accumulate reserves for the spring breeding season. Flocks roost in trees at night and forage during the day. Our Mixed Pine and Hardwood Tree stands, interspersed with clearings, are a desirable habitat for this large game bird.
Males, like the mount on display in Harrison Hall of Natural Science, have dark iridescent plumage, bare heads, and necks with blue and pink streaks. These gobblers also have spurs and a beard: a tuft of thick, hair-like feathers that protrude out of the animal’s breast.
Female turkeys (hens) lack the spurs and most do not have a beard. Flocks usually consist of hens and immatures.
Wild Turkeys have long, thick legs and large toes for walking and scratching. Turkey tracks in the snow show the 3 long toes facing forward and sometimes the hind toe print. Their metatarsal pad and claws don’t typically show up in the snow.
It has been a sight watching our flock of Wild Turkeys outside and seeing their tracks in the snow! Visit us during Afternoon Explorations and see what else you might discover at Roper Mountain.
