MOUNTAIN HIGHLIGHT:
LIVING HISTORY FARM
“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”
The Living History Farm staff are fired up about our newfound knowledge!
We recently had a fascinating professional development day with Barry McCall, N.C. primitive technology expert, who trained our farm staff on various Native American stone tools and techniques, including a flintknapping demonstration, atlatl spear throwing and river cane spear making.
Many of the tools pictured are now part of the farm’s collection.
We can't wait to incorporate our learning and inspiration into Native American activities for upcoming school field trips and Summer Exploration Camps!

…that a pair of Canadian Geese are hoping to set up home in our pond?
For a third year in a row, a pair of Canadian Geese have begun nesting on our pond’s island. This nesting site is preferred because it is elevated, surrounded by water, and fairly safe from natural predators. Since geese are mostly herbivores, our grassy fields nearby provide them plenty of food.
The female spends most of the time on the nest, which is well hidden. Two to nine eggs are laid in a shallow depression lined with plant material and down. The incubation period – in which the female incubates while the male remains nearby – lasts for 24-32 days. As soon as the goslings hatch, they are able to walk, swim, and find their own food. The male goose is more noticeable with his territorial behavior. Honking, hissing, and even aggressive behavior can be displayed while protecting the nest and goslings. It is never a good idea to feed the geese, as it encourages them to stalk and beg for food and be even more aggressive.
On your next visit to our pond during Afternoon Explorations, maybe goslings will be seen?
