HANWASH Spotlight - Leading by Example

Friscat Gilles – President 2023-24,

Rotary Club of Memorial des Gonaïves

Hello from HANWASH – the Rotarian-led Haiti National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Initiative!

Did you know that HANWASH was founded by, and continues to be led by Rotarian volunteers in Haiti and around the world? We would like to shine a special spotlight on those who make up the heart of our work in Haiti, the Club Presidents. Operating under a "Champion Partnership" model, Rotary Clubs in Haiti are joining forces with Rotarians in the US and Canada to create lasting change in communities across the country.

This month we are thrilled to introduce President Friscat Gilles, a remarkable leader who is spearheading projects that are transforming lives in the communes of Terre-Neuve.

Friscat Gilles – President 2023-24,

Rotary Club of Memorial des Gonaïves

Friscat Gilles shares: I discovered Rotary because of their commitment to eradicating Polio and their dedication to providing water services for all. Water is an absolute necessity for life, so I became interested and eager to get involved to serve my community. When an opportunity arose in Terre-Neuve for a club focused on these issues, I knew I wanted to collaborate with existing clubs and members to address them.

As President, education stands as one of my top priorities. In Terre-Neuve, there are numerous talented young students who are unable to pursue education due to financial constraints. Alongside working with HANWASH, I strive to distribute school supplies such as backpacks and repair classrooms to support children in receiving an education. Additionally, I make efforts to educate others about the commendable work Rotary is doing for the community.

I consider myself an individual who acts. I dislike idleness and prefer being part of the solution. Working as a team and witnessing successful project completions brings me immense satisfaction. I eagerly look forward to maintaining this proactive outlook during my term as President and pushing forth projects that make a difference.

The Rotary Club of Memorial des Gonaïves, Haiti, and Rotary District 6290 (Northwestern Michigan and Southern Ontario) set out to work with the HANWASH team to change lives in Terre-Neuve. To get a glimpse of the work being done take a look at this page.

Rotarians are Making the News

"Accessible to citizens: in Mykolaiv

"Rotary Club" opened a modern water purification point"

Seeing the problems of the residents of the city of Mykolaiv with access to drinking water, "Rotarians" from different parts of the world decided to help the hero city.

From now on, a modern purified water dispensing point is operating in the Ship district of the city. The correspondent is a WITNESS about this, info was told by Artem Vashchylenko, Head of the Humanitarian Staff of the Business Support Center, Past President of the Rotary Club of Mykolaiv.

The new location is located on the territory of the "Aquarius" pool and is open to citizens. At the station, using the most modern equipment, water is purified from the network.

"The capacity of the station is from 30 to 60 tons of water per day - it is the most modern automated station today. In fact, it is a reverse osmosis filtration system. Water is also additionally mineralized and reaches consumers. The cost of such a station reaches 80,000 dollars, without the cost of installation."

In addition to the Rotary Club of Mykolaiv, Rotarians from Greece, the USA, and the Bahamas provided assistance in the purchase of important equipment.

Vitaliy Lukov, deputy mayor, also appreciated the significant help for the city.

" Now it is very difficult to overestimate the creation of any additional point of dispensing free purified water for the residents of the city of Mykolaiv. We were already moving with the liberation of Kherson to the restoration of normal water supply to the city, but, unfortunately, the terrorist act of blowing up the Kakhovskaya HPP took us away from the moment of obtaining clean water. Therefore, every such place and initiative of private structures, at the initiative of charitable foundations, religious organizations is only supported by the city government. 130 water dispensers have been created by the city authorities - they are certainly not enough. We must improve the living conditions of Mykolaiv residents as much as possible so that residents return to our city, and we begin to rebuild our city, our economy, our normal life," he said.

All expenses for the maintenance of the station are borne by "Rotary Club of Mykolaiv".

The WASH Rotary Action Group is pleased to consider partnerships with any corporate supporter. Due to the unique attributes of water sources and water provision, acceptance of corporate support does not imply an endorsement of any particular water technology. Rotarians, Rotary Clubs, and Rotary partners must evaluate any technology to determine if it is the best solution for the conditions where the program will be implemented. The WASH Rotary Action Group can provide guidance about where different technologies work best, but Rotarians and Rotary clubs must make the final decision about how to implement their programs.
