Making a Difference on
World Toilet Day!
Original article coauthored by Firdaus Kapadia (RC Nasik Rd, District 3030) and Mark Balla (RC Box Hill Central, District 9810).

Happy World Toilet Day everyone! A day on which we acknowledge the hundreds of millions of people around the world who don’t have a toilet. A day that acknowledges the millions of girls who drop out of school on reaching puberty because their school has no toilets.
Mark Balla: I have very exciting news to go along with this most auspicious of days! We have just received approval from The Rotary Foundation for a substantial new WASH in Schools project in India. For clarity “WASH in Schools” is “Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools”. The total value of the project is almost US$93,000 or close to A$140,000. A little under 60% of the funding comes from The Rotary Foundation and a number of Rotary Districts in Australia and India with the rest coming from Rotary clubs, schools, corporate supporters, other charitable organisations and individuals all over the world!
In January 2019 a group of us from Australia travelled to India to unveil some new toilets. We were very fortunate to be accompanied by then Trustee of The Rotary Foundation, Julia Phelps. Such a wonderful experience for all concerned.
After the festivities were over, the "toilet" people of the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central and the Rotary Club of Nasik Road sat down to discuss the big question: what next? And so, this project was born. A first draft of the project concept was completed by around May of 2019, and fund raising began in earnest with a rolling series of public speaking engagements all over Australia and around the world both in person and on Zoom.
We hit a few hurdles on the way. The pandemic was just one of them. There were even a couple of occasions when we thought of throwing in the towel. Then we remembered the many thousands of children who were relying on us to get this project underway. And so, we persevered.
At this point I would like to hand over to my friend Firdaus Kapadia from the Rotary Club of Nasik Road to give you an outline of the project. All yours Firdaus.
Firdaus Kapadia from the Rotary Club of Nasik Road: Thanks Mark.
Under this project we envisage providing sanitation facilities including toilet cubicles, urinals and hand wash stations to four schools near Nasik.
The project will also provide training to selected teachers from these schools for imparting a government approved hygiene curriculum to students through the Cooperating Agency M/s. Effenkay Corporation.
The total number of students benefiting from this project is 4600 every year for the life of the toilets. Indirectly the benefit would extend to the families of these students.
Our previous experience with similar projects has been a 15% increase in admission of girl students and also reduced absence of adolescent girls during their periods. Adolescent girls are forced to drop out of the education system due to lack of sanitation facilities in their schools and this project will ensure that they remain in school and complete their education.
Three of these schools are located more than 60 km from the city of Nasik, a few hours by road from Mumbai. This grant also involves follow up with regular visits to the schools and ensuring supervision of proper utilization of the facilities provided, and also overseeing implementation of the hygiene education curriculum.
Thanks Firdaus. So very exciting! I can’t wait to get over there in late March to unveil the completed toilets!
Mark Balla: For those readers who are still riveted by this story, if you want to know more, my book “Toilet Warrior” tell it in detail, warts and all. If you don’t laugh at some stage and cry at some stage while reading it, I will happily refund the cost of your purchase. I’m told that it is a good read and to top it all off, if you do buy a copy, you will be helping ensure that this work continues. www.toiletwarrior.net
In the meantime, please enjoy the short slideshow that we've prepared giving a little taste of some of the work we’ve done over the past nine years impacting on the lives of hundreds of thousands of children, their families and their communities.

Operation Toilets Annual Report
Excerpt submitted by the WASH-RAG Ambassadors
on behalf of the Rotary Club of Box Hill
Operation Toilets Australia Inc.(OTA) is an advocacy and change-maker entity with a focus on behavioural change as part of water, sanitation, and health projects in the developing world.

Our core purpose is to encourage behavioural change in schools with the Wash in Schools (WinS) program in India and in the community in Ethiopia with the Community Led Total Sanitation and Health (CLTS&H) program.

Our focus in schools has the special aim to improve the educational opportunities of adolescent girls and in the community to improve the overall health of all family members.

We have moved from a focus on hardware (building and refurbishing toilets) to a combined focus on hardware and software (health education and maintenance training). OTA is a project of the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central.

Thanks to all the members of the Operation Toilets Australia committee who have contributed to the ongoing success of OTA projects in 2021-22, especially the project's founder, Mark Balla.

I would like to acknowledge the financial support and goodwill conveyed by Rotarians, Rotary clubs, Rotary districts, individuals and organizations in Australia, India, USA, Canada and the UK who have donated substantial funds to our projects since inception.

Thanks also to our project partners in India especially PP Firdaus Kapadia and the members of the Rotary Club of Nasik Road and PDG Ramesh Aggarwal and the members of the Rotary Club of Delhi Ashoka and the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa and International Needs Australia, our Cooperating Organization partner in Ethiopia.

Finally thank you to all the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central members who continue to offer encouragement and support for which we are very grateful.

I would like to wish incoming Chair Amanda Southwell, incoming Project Coordinator, Andy ,and all of the OTA committee all the best for 2022-23.

What are our WASH WARRIORS doing?
Investing in Water, People and Community Scaling-up in Rural Tanzania
By: David Fox, Rotary Club of Ames, Iowa and WASH-RAG Member
The Rotary Club of Ames, Iowa and the Rotary Club of Same, Tanzania have worked together since 2013 to complete four Global Grants for complete water systems in three villages in Same District, Tanzania. These Global Grants resulted from the Program Planning and Performance Evaluation project (PPP) initiated by The Rotary Foundation as developed by WASH-RAG. The initial step of PPP was performing a ‘needs assessment’ that prioritized projects and led to Global Grants to implement them. The Same club hosted one of the TRF sponsored ‘needs assessments’ and identified seven villages that wanted water as their primary need. Our Rotary team has completed three of those priority villages and the Tanzania government has, or is in the process of, completing the other four.
These four completed projects have proven to be sustainable with trained system operators, accessible replacement parts and sound financial management systems. The projects have shown impressive impacts on the daily lives of the villagers that include:
Women’s Empowerment
More family time
New economic opportunities
Time for community-based involvement
Education
School attendance is up
Favorable learning environment with sanitation and safe water
Improved grades, overall higher performance
Peace and Harmony
Transparent water pricing – accountability
Fewer conflicts within families
Less time dealing with water issues
Community Health
Fewer cases of water borne disease
Food security - gardens and fruit trees
Personal hygiene
Economic Development
New construction of both homes and businesses
Job creation with sustainable incomes
Nurturing of entrepreneurial spirit
Environmental
Tree planting
Control of soil erosion
Water management

With the completion of the needs from the first assessment, the Same club prepared a new ‘needs assessment’ for ten villages and selected two as the top priority for their next project. The new project will be in the mountain villages of Menamu and Vudee, serving over 4200 people with clean water and sanitation. The new water system will be similar in design to the recently completed spring source project: construction of an intake structure to capture the source spring water, a transmission pipeline from the spring intake to a treatment building, filtering the water, treating the water with chlorine, and distributing the water to multiple distribution points throughout the villages. Several large water storage tanks will be constructed to complete the system. Sanitation systems will be constructed to service the schools and medical facilities as a separate Global Grant.

Two new partners will be involved with the Menamu-Vudee project. RUWASA (Rural & Urban Water and Sanitation Authority) in Tanzania is a new agency that will take responsibility for managing the systems during and after construction. Empower Tanzania (ETI) will provide training, monitoring and evaluation services for the projects.
The current estimate for the water portion of the Global Grant is $454,000. We are currently about one-third of the way to our funding needs and encourage any WASH-RAG members, their clubs or districts to join us. We have had a lot of support for our previous projects from many clubs and districts in the US and around the world. The WASH Rotary Action Group is pleased to consider partnerships with any corporate supporter. Due to the unique attributes of water sources and water provision, acceptance of corporate support does not imply an endorsement of any particular water technology. Rotarians, Rotary Clubs, and Rotary partners must evaluate any technology to determine if it is the best solution for the conditions where the program will be implemented. The WASH Rotary Action Group can provide guidance about where different technologies work best, but Rotarians and Rotary clubs must make the final decision about how to implement their programs.
