Fire Extinguisher Types

The Essentials of Fire Extinguishers

There are many types of fire extinguishers. It is important to use the proper extinguisher for the specific job. It also needs to be noted that for a fire extinguisher to be effective the extinguisher must be:

  • the right type/rating for the job
  • accessible and close at hand
  • in good working order
  • used on a fire that is still small
  • used by a trained person

Upcoming Events

This month we are bringing you a Case Study

BOSS Products presents a case study on

General Hammer Mill Operation

General-Hammer-Mill-Operation-1-1200x524 image

What are Hammer Mills

Hammer Mills are a group of machines which are universally used for rough particle size reduction in grain mills and similar operations—typical applications include grinding whole grains, screenings, animal feed ingredients and related products.

Potential Risks

Due to their position in the process, Hammer Mills are often subjected to foreign objects such as stones, metal and other debris, potentially creating sparks.

Other potential risks include overheated conveyor bearings and failure.

Challenges

Proper operation requires constant airflow sweeping through the mill, requiring air exhaust systems like bin vent filters, cyclones or baghouse filters.

Air intake is done either through the product feeder housing or louvres in the mill presenting isolation challenges.

Prevalence & Costs of Combustible Dust

Combustible dust is present in nearly every manufacturing and industrial processing facility across the globe and serious accidents can occur if a manufacturing facility does not employ a proper Fire & Explosion Mitigation strategy. According to OSHA, the number of catastrophic fires and explosions caused by combustible dust has been significantly increasing in the past 25 years, causing loss of life and injury as well as a significant loss of property, production, and wages to the labour force.

Donaldson Launches Contura Pulse Controller to Enhance Dust Collector Performance

Donaldson’s Contura Pulse Controller gives real-time dust collector data to boost uptime, streamline maintenance, and support compliance.

Future Outlook

By 2031, sodium-ion batteries in Canada will become a mainstream energy storage solution, especially for grid stabilization, renewable energy integration, and mid-range electric vehicles. Advances in electrode materials, electrolyte formulation, and cell design will continue to improve performance metrics, enabling wider adoption. The ecosystem will benefit from increasing government incentives, strategic alliances, and growing consumer acceptance. The expansion of local supply chains and production capacity in Canada will reduce reliance on imported lithium technologies, thereby boosting regional energy resilience and economic growth.

Donaldson Company, Inc., a global leader in filtration products and solutions, has introduced the Contura Pulse Controller, now available on select Donaldson dust collectors in North America and Europe. The system provides operators with real-time data to help optimize performance and manage maintenance proactively.

Powered by the company’s ICue™ Connected Technology, the Contura Pulse Controller uses integrated sensors and a secure cloud-based platform to collect and analyze data from industrial dust collectors. Users can monitor critical indicators, receive insights through an online dashboard, and support uptime, maintenance efficiency, and compliance tracking.
