A reflection from Karen Schedin, Vice President for Enrollment Management

Happy New Year! Despite 2020 being a challenging year for us all, I am forever grateful that it delivered me to Westminster College – and I’m looking forward to the days when I can meet you in person!

The nature of my work in admissions means that, while the calendar has changed, I am almost halfway through the year, as my “year” begins in September! Still, I am like everyone else and consider January the time to clean off my desk, clear my head, think about what is possible, assess my goals, and dig in to continue to give it my all.

Most of us have thought about our goals for this new year – whether it be in our career or personal life. I’d like to encourage you to keep with it and try changing the course in which you reach that goal if something isn’t working. You can change the plan, but never the goal, and that is necessary in my work, too. Reassessing plans to reach a goal is something we do at Westminster – and it’s good to do that in your lives, too.

Every year in higher education, I embark on a similar calendar of my own creation and am influenced by the traditional dates and markers associated with recruiting. This calendar year has its usual cycle and drum beat, but in between, there is discovery, analysis, networking, decision-making, and execution. The challenge is in how each class of students responds, so we adjust and adapt all the time – we change the plan, but never the goal.

It is probably no surprise then, that ‘weekend Karen’, as my husband, Tony, likes to frame it, is inspired by the lack of structure and the ability to do anything we like...Read the full story.

Make space in your living room and in your minds to practice some yoga with Sarah Parish '12. She will guide you through various moves that can be modified to any skill level.

Sarah fell in love with yoga when she yearned to be in a healthier place. "I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I attended my first, hot, power yoga class... I fell in love," she said. "It has helped me become physically and mentally strong, taught me how to accept imperfections, acknowledge all feelings - the good, bad, indifferent, and be in the present moment."

She received her degree in Fine Arts and her M.Ed. from Westminster College. Because of her college experience, she carries with her the value of perspectives and a knowledge that education, diversity, and experiences create a better quality of life.

Honoring Coach Nicholson
It's been a little over one year since the passing of beloved Coach Gene Nicholson. Westminster College recently made the decision to honor his legacy to Titan Athletics by recognizing him and his accomplishments in the National Championship Display Case in the newly constructed Huey Heritage Center in the lobby of Memorial Field House. The magnificent case immediately greets visitors as they enter the field house, just like Coach did. Its enormous size stands in comparison to Coach's personality and passion for Titan Athletics. If Gene meant a lot to you, you can honor him by making a gift toward the case here.

Thank you to the many donors who have already contributed to this wonderful effort. You can view their names by visiting here and clicking on 'current donors.'

To learn more about the case, contact Rob Klamut at [email protected] or 724-946-7018.
