Notes from the LYS Board of Directors
Greetings LYS Families,

I hope you have all been able to enjoy your last few days of summer as the new school year gets underway. We are very exited to get the 2018/19 LYS season started in just a few weeks!

As you may recall from last month's newsletter, Scott Krueger, our former board president, has stepped down after more than two years of service as his daughter moves on to college. I will be serving as interim board president as the board works through this transition over the next few months. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Scott for his service to LYS and to wish the entire Krueger family well in their future endeavors as they embark on this new journey.

This season the board will be highly focused on growth for the organization, with new efforts already underway for recruitment and community outreach. Growing our membership will provide greater flexibility for our music directors and allow the best possible experience for our talented musicians.  Please help us spread the word for our new member auditions on Saturday, August 25 . We hope to bring in even more great young musicians for LYS!

Good luck to all as we get started on the new school year. I look forward to the opportunity to meet with you next month at our start-of-season parents meeting!

Take care,
Jon King
LYS Board President (Interim)

We had a great time at the B I N G O fundraiser!

"Our volunteers helped out in almost all aspects of the operation including running the cashier station, walking the floor to sell additional playing cards and verify bingo claims, and running the 'pickle bar' (in bingo parlance, 'pickles' are similar to lottery scratch cards). It was very interesting to see all the different activities and games-within-games going on — this is not grandma's senior center bingo!  As a fundraiser, it was a good fast-paced but not overwhelming activity, and an easy way to earn money for the organization. My daughter and I had a great time and look forward to going back to future sessions!"

Notes 🎵 from Mr. Kemp,
LYWE Music Director
It's time to go back to school! That might be a  slightly less  than happy thought for many of you, but everything is in motion toward something else in life... just like it is with music. Each of the music directors has been getting ready for another great season with the Longmont Youth Symphony, and we have some really great music picked out to start with. ( Teaser: the Wind Ensemble will be exploring some wonderful music by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams!)

Those of you who are returning this year know what a  whirlwind  the first concert cycle can be. To those of you who have just joined us: Get ready! We only have FIVE rehearsals before the first concert, and every minute of the time we play together needs to be productive. Imagine putting a concert together in one week of rehearsals at your school. That's what we do. Welcome to the big league!

To do this, everyone must come to rehearsals prepared to play their part. As one of my own mentors once told me,  we come to rehearsal to learn each other's parts... not to learn how to play our own .  Make sure you are practicing at home and with your lesson teacher so the first concert sparkles with technique and expressiveness!

I can't wait to start, and I hope you're getting excited too!
Students who qualify can receive tuition scholarships for any LYS ensemble and payment assistance for approved private lessons.

It's easy to advertise with LYS!

We are currently seeking grant opportunities and sponsorship from local businesses!
We recently received a grant from the Helen Clark/Lanyon Trust Fund THANK YOU for supporting LYS!
