The summer months are a busy time for our road maintenance crews, who do the important work that keeps Washington County moving.
During the summer, much of our maintenance work focuses on activities that require dry conditions or addresses roadside vegetation. Crews work 10-hour days Monday-Thursday to maximize efficiency and get more done.
Our roadway surfaces crew is paving or chip sealing over two dozen rural roads this summer. Our traffic maintenance crew is refreshing stripes on roads county-wide, focusing first on high-traffic roads. This work must be done in dry conditions.
During FY 2025-26, we're planning to clear and trim about 1,700 miles of roadside vegetation. Our vegetation crew is working overtime during the busy growing season. We have also purchased a new mower to increase vegetation trimming capacity. The crews mow region-by-region to reduce travel time and work as efficiently as possible.
Our bridge operations crew is completing maintenance work on County bridges to keep them in good condition. The drainage crew is working on culverts, ditches and other stormwater facilities in rural Washington County. Doing this work in summer ensures the stormwater system is ready for the wet season.
In addition to this planned work, our crews handle unexpected events and service requests from the public. If you see something in the public right-of-way that needs maintenance, request road service.
