School's back in session! Get an A+ in road safety

The school bells are ringing as school comes back into session. Get ready for the return of school busses, young pedestrians and bicyclists.

Drivers:

• Leave extra following distance between you and school buses.
• Drivers on both sides of the road must stop if a bus has lights flashing and stop sign extended.
• Slow down during school hours and when school zone signs are flashing. Look closely for pedestrians, crossing guards and bikes. Young travelers may make unpredictable movements.
• Never block crosswalks when stopped at an intersection, forcing pedestrians to walk around.
• Pass cyclists slowly with three feet between them and your vehicle.

Students and family members:

• Remind students to walk on sidewalks as much as possible and to look both ways before crossing the street.
• Discourage playing, shoving and using phones around traffic
• Make sure cyclists have properly fitted helmets.
• Teach students who bike to follow traffic signs and signals and use bike lanes when possible.
