Tualatin-Sherwood Road projects win design award

A 2025 Honor Award was presented to Washington County Land Use & Transportation Capital Project Services and design consultant Harper Houf Peterson Righellis, Inc., in recognition of the Tualatin-Sherwood-Roy Rogers Road (Chicken Creek to SW Olds Place) projects.

The award was presented by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Oregon at the 2025 Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) Dinner on Jan. 30. The EAA is an annual design competition recognizing engineering achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of merit and ingenuity.

The award is related to three contiguous Washington County projects:

• Tualatin-Sherwood Road/Highway 99W Intersection – Funded by the Major Streets Transportation Improvement Program (MSTIP) and Willamette Water Supply System (WWSS). Completed in September 2024.
• Roy Rogers Road (Chicken Creek to Borchers Drive) – Funded by Transportation Development Tax, WWSS and city of Sherwood. Completed in September 2024.
• Tualatin-Sherwood Road (Langer Farms Parkway to Teton Avenue) – Funded by MSTIP, WWSS and the cities of Sherwood and Tualatin. Expected completion is October 2025.

The projects improved traffic efficiency in this high-traffic area. Rather than widening Tualatin-Sherwood Road, the overall width was reduced while efficiency was increased by reducing traffic signals and access points. The projects decreased travel time along the corridor by up to 15 minutes during peak hours. A corresponding reduction in idle times and vehicle emissions resulted in environmental benefits. Protected bicycle lanes, separated sidewalks and a dedicated pedestrian signal increased safety for all travelers.

Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation plans to build 700 feet of sidewalk on the north side of Kinnaman Road between Kinnaman Elementary School and existing sidewalk near 196th Avenue.
