Winter weather refresher: Look out for localized flooding

Over the past week, wet weather resulted in some localized flooding County roads. Most impacts to our roads have ended, but it serves as a reminder to travel safely when flooding is possible.

It only takes 6 inches of moving water to knock over and carry away an adult, and 12 inches to carry away a small car. Standing water can hide debris, ditches or other obstacles. Never walk, bike or drive through floodwaters.

Our road crew may post warning signs and barricades to prevent travel on flooded roads. It is illegal to move or travel around barricades. If you're caught moving one, it could result in a fine.

A bicycle can be an exciting holiday gift for kids and adults alike! Give the gift of safety by making sure there's a helmet to match.

Oregon law requires helmets for all bicycle operators and passengers under the age of 16. Bicyclists older than 16 should also always wear a helmet.

When buying a helmet, measure the head of the bicyclist to find the right size. Bringing them to the store to try on helmets can be helpful. Look for a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) certification inside the helmet to make sure it is up to standard. Get the helmet fitted before going for a ride!
