Studded tires must be swapped out by March 31

Studded tires aren't allowed on roads in Oregon after March 31. Get them swapped out to avoid a fine!

State law allows studded tires between Nov. 1 and March 31. Driving on studded tires out of season can get you a $165 fine.

Studded tires help increase traction, but can damage roads. They may create ruts in the road where water collects. When it freezes, the roads get more slippery and the ice can further damage roads.

If it snows after April 1, drivers can still use chains, snow-approved all-season tires or other traction devices.
