Planning for Possibility: Rural ADUs in Washington County

Washington County is proposing amendments to the Rural/Natural Resource Plan and the Community Development Code that could expand housing options in rural areas.

Save the Date: 2026 Public Hearings

• Planning Commission – January 7 at 1:30 pm
• Washington County Board of Commissioners – February 24 at 6:30 pm

Ordinance No. 912 proposes allowing Rural Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and Rural Historic Accessory Dwelling Units ADUs in rural residential districts. These changes aim to support flexible living arrangements while preserving the character of rural communities.

Roads Crews Step Up During Flooding & High Winds

This week’s storm brought heavy rain and strong winds across the county—and road crews were ready.

Working around the clock, our teams responded swiftly to keep roads safe and protect public infrastructure.

Their work included:

• Closing the Fern Hill flood gates due to high water
• Completing 20 emergency response work orders
• Managing 14 partially restricted roads
• Executing 3 full road closures: Old Hwy 47, Bates Road, and Division/SW 149th

From placing high-water signs to unblocking culverts and coordinating with emergency partners, our crews demonstrated incredible dedication under pressure.
