🦺 October is National Pedestrian Safety Month

As our community steps out this fall to school, work, and community festivities, it’s vital to raise awareness and promote habits that protect everyone on our streets.

🚶 Tips for Pedestrians

  • Use sidewalks whenever available.
  • If no sidewalks exist, walk facing traffic.
  • Make eye contact with drivers, and cross only when traffic is clear.
  • Stay alert—don’t rely on drivers to see you.
  • When walking in the dark, at dawn, or at dusk, wear reflective clothing and consider carrying a small flashlight for visibility.

🚗 Tips for Drivers

  • Slow down, especially in neighborhoods, school zones, and at crosswalks.
  • Yield to pedestrians and stop well before the crosswalk to give other drivers a clearer line of sight.
  • Be extra cautious at night or during poor weather conditions.
  • When backing up, stop, look, and listen for pedestrians who may be behind or approaching your vehicle.

Pedestrian Safety Month reminds us of the vulnerability of people walking. By working together, we can make our streets safer for everyone.

International Walk+Roll to School Day

Wednesday, October 7, is Walk+Roll to School Day— an annual celebration that encourages families and neighbors to walk, bike, and roll together.

The community is encouraged to keep the momentum through October by promoting safe, active travel in their neighborhoods.

By taking part, our community supports healthier lifestyles, safer streets, and a stronger sense of connection for families and neighbors alike.

Check with your local schools for more information on how to participate or join nearby events.
