Temporary Signs Don't Belong in the Public Right-of-Way

As campaign season and fall events approach, remember that temporary signs, including political signs, garage sale notices, and real estate signs, are not allowed in the public right-of-way in unincorporated Washington County.

The right of way includes the road, shoulders, ditches, and sidewalks. Signs also cannot be attached to traffic signposts, streetlights, utility cabinets, or utility poles.

Signs placed in the right of way can block traffic signs, signals, pedestrian access, and important sight distance for drivers. For safety reasons, state law and County resolution prohibit temporary signs in these areas.

If you plan to post a sign, make sure it is on your own private property or that you have permission from the property owner where the sign will be placed.
