Summer Paving Season Begins

Summer paving is here! Washington County completes annual paving work each summer to keep neighborhood streets safe, smooth, and in good condition.

Crews and contractors will be working across unincorporated Washington County this July through September.

This season’s program includes a mix of chip seal, slurry seal, and asphalt overlay treatments.

Some paving schedules have been posted on the Paving: 2026 Schedule page, while others will continue to be added and updated throughout the season as project timing is confirmed.

Schedules may change because of weather, staffing, or material availability. Please check the page regularly for updates.

Road Maintenance 101: What is a Slurry Seal?

Slurry seal is a thin protective coating made of oil, water, aggregate, and additives. It is applied over the pavement to seal small cracks, slow aging, and extend the roadway's life by 5-9 years.

Slurry seal is the second step in a two‑step pavement maintenance process.

Before slurry seal can be applied, crews first complete crack sealing, which fills larger cracks to keep water from penetrating under the roadway.

After crack sealing, there is typically a 3-week gap to allow the material to settle before the final protective coating is applied.

WHAT RESIDENTS CAN EXPECT

  • Crack sealing requires minimal traffic control, and streets typically remain open
  • Slurry seal application: no traffic or parked cars allowed on the road for the entire application and curing period

Community Development Code (CDC) Assessment

After 15 months of analysis and community engagement, the County has published the Community Development Code (CDC) Assessment Priorities Report.

The assessment outlines how the CDC functions today, where improvements are needed, and provides recommendations on implementing CDC changes in the years ahead.

Feedback from spring open houses emphasized the need for a clearer, more user-friendly CDC.

The final report is a set of recommendations only; any updates to the CDC itself would require going through the land use ordinance process, which includes public hearings before the Planning Commission and the Board of County Commissioners.

Plan Ahead for July 4th Holiday Travel

Heading out for the July 4th holiday? Give yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going safely.

Before starting your trip, check wc-roads.com for current travel impacts and any community events that may involve road closures.

Impaired driving crashes increase over the July 4th holiday. Never drive drunk, high, or “buzzed.” If you're attending celebrations where alcohol or other substances are present:

  • Arrange a designated driver or sober ride before you head out.
  • Be prepared to order a rideshare or call a cab if needed.
  • Plan to stay overnight if you can’t get a sober ride home.
  • If it’s safe to do so, offer to hold the keys of guests who shouldn’t be driving.

Thank you for helping keep our roads safe. Wishing you a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July holiday.
