Low-Cost Safety Upgrades Deliver Big Benefits to Drivers

A new Washington County study shows that a simple, low-cost upgrade is making a big difference for travelers.

Reflective backplates—bright borders added around traffic signals—have reduced crashes by 16% at upgraded intersections.

They improve visibility at night, in bad weather, during power outages, and in sun-glare conditions.

Because they’re inexpensive, quick to install, and can be added during routine maintenance, reflective backplates offer a high-impact safety boost for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and transit riders alike.

Washington County will continue adding them to new and existing signals to help keep everyone moving safely.

Your First Look: Scholls Ferry Road Pedestrian Improvement

Our Scholls Ferry Road Construction Kickoff Online Open House is now live!

As construction gets ready to begin, community members are invited to learn about the safety and accessibility improvements planned along Scholls Ferry Road between Laurelwood Avenue and 77th Avenue, and at 121st Avenue.

This project will fill key sidewalk gaps, add onstreet bike lanes, upgrade crossings, and improve accessibility to make the corridor safer and more comfortable for everyone traveling in the area.

With increasing travel to nearby schools, parks, and neighborhoods, these upgrades will support safer routes and better everyday connections.

The online open house includes an overview of the improvements, construction timelines, and what neighbors can expect as work begins.

We encourage the community to visit the online open house, explore the plans, and share feedback as we kick off construction on Scholls Ferry Road.

205th Avenue: Baseline Road to Quatama Street

Construction will begin in June on 205th Avenue, with improvements to include:

Sidewalks with ADA-ramps
Buffered bike lanes
Streetlights
Center turn lane
Retaining walls
Improved stormwater drains and treatment facilities

The bridge over Beaverton Creek will also be replaced. A full road closure will start in summer 2027 for bridge replacement.

The project is funded by: Major Streets Transportation Improvement Program (MSTIP)

Upcoming Road Closure: Kaiser Road Starting June 15

Kaiser Road will close between Springville Road and Brugger Road from June 15 to August 16, 2026, for construction.

The closure will allow crews to rebuild a dip in the road and raise the street by about four feet.

Drivers should follow the signed detour using Germantown Road, 185th Avenue, and Springville Road. Pedestrians and cyclists may use neighborhood routes.
