Your energy and hard work directly supports our neighbors during these cold months.

Thank you for being part of our community.

VOLUNTEER NEEDS

HOME NORTH DELIVERY WAGONS

The Home Delivery North team is currently seeking a volunteer to assist with transporting wagons! Use your own vehicle to pick up seven, portable, folding wagons from the Hub, 5151 N. Ravenswood, then take the wagons to the delivery building.

Delivery building will either be 1032 W. Montrose, 4225 N. Sheridan, or 920 W. Lawrence depending on the week. (Ana Petersohn will confirm the location with you upon wagon pick-up.)

You will assist with the delivery distribution shift, then bring the wagons back to the Hub when deliveries are completed.

Please email [email protected] if you are interested in helping with this shift!

EL MERCADITO DISTRIBUTION

Do you enjoy Sheridan distribution shifts? Consider a change of scenery by signing up for an El Mercadito distribution shift — Monday through Wednesday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 12 p.m. – 4 pm.

Help is always appreciated at this site!

HIGHLIGHTS AND STORIES

HONORING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. THROUGH SERVICE

“I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits.”

– Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thank you to all individual volunteers, as well as our group volunteers from Aldi, TEKSystems (pictured below), and BFKN (pictured above) for coming out to help on a very, very cold Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!

ON THE BLOG

As we welcome the new year, we are proud to look back on all that we accomplished in 2023. Check out this blog post by our CEO, Kellie O’Connell, highlighting our top 10 accomplishments from 2023!

And if you haven't seen our 2022-2023 annual report, make sure to give it a read here. We could not have risen to the challenges of the past two years without the outpouring of support from our donors, community partners and volunteers like you. Thank you for your unwavering compassion and generosity.

REMEMBERING ERIC F.

We are sad to share the news of the passing of Eric F., an amazing volunteer cargo van helper.

He began volunteering in 2014 at the age of 65. Eric dedicated an impressive 975 hours of service to Nourishing Hope.

We will remember him fondly and will forever be grateful for his work.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT –– Lance Aguilar

Lance Aguilar joined Nourishing Hope as a volunteer in 2021 at the Sheridan and Hub locations. Originally hired as a temporary van driver/warehouse coordinator, he’s worked with Nourishing Hope on a permanent basis as a warehouse coordinator since April 2022.

As an individual who marches to the beat of his own drum, Lance shows a healthy respect for the odd and eccentric parts of life. Lance spends time outside of work reading, watching tv, and listening to music and podcasts – usually alongside Pamela, a cat who’s shared his home for the past 9 years.

He’s especially interested in storytelling that engages perspective taking or features non-human characters. If you see Lance around while your volunteering, be sure to say hi!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT — Lena T.

This month we are featuring Lena T. as our volunteer spotlight! Lena is known around the Hub as being incredibly knowledgeable and willing to help with anything. Learn more about Lena below!

What made you decide to start volunteering at Nourishing Hope?

It was early in the pandemic, and like many people I was looking for a way to help my community. I had volunteered with other food pantries once or twice in the past, but Nourishing Hope was facing high demand and needed volunteers so I signed up for a gleaning shift. Almost four years later, I'm still here!

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

Honestly, it's the people. I've gotten to know a lot of the staff and regular volunteers. It's nice to see familiar faces and know that I can help out in a very different way than I do in my day to day life. I can also count on it being a workout, moving boxes and using the pallet jacks.

What do you do for work?

As of this moment, I'm transitioning out of my role running a small business helping issue advocacy and progressive organizations run equitable hiring processes. That's a long way of saying I'm currently gainfully unemployed and exploring what this next phase of life brings.

Any "fun facts?"

People are highly amused by the name of my cat. My last name (and hers) is Tom. Her first name is Phan. Enjoy.

Thank you, Lena, for your dedication and hard work!
