The Local Funders Group received the Philanthropist of the Year Award at this year's National Philanthropy Day Event on November 18th. Here is some of what was shared:
"The Sciencenter and IC3 enthusiastically nominated the Tompkins County Local Funders Group as Philanthropist of the Year for an Organization."
"In 2020, when the pandemic hit, the group which includes:
> Community Arts Partnership
> Community Foundation of Tompkins County
> Health Foundation for Western & Central New York
> Human Services Coalition
> Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency
> Legacy Foundation
> Park Foundation
> United Way of Tompkins County
> Tompkins Charitable Gift Fund
> Tompkins County Tourism Program
> Triad Foundation
> Women Building Community
joined together to provide a rapid response to an emergent need.
The group worked together to bring in experts from area nonprofits so that all funders had a common understanding of the pandemic’s impact on food security, health, childcare, and other basic needs. Applications to one funder were shared with the entire group so that multiple funders could contribute to meet the needs of nonprofits as we responded to the community’s urgent needs.
By March 31, 2021 over $2M had been distributed through 299 grants to local organizations."
Thank you Association for Fundraising Professionals for this wonderful support!

The Tompkins County SURJ Chapter has launched their Redistributing White Wealth campaign, "an effort to get white folks in Tompkins County to start moving money on a regular basis to counteract the racial wealth gap and the financial impacts of white supremacy".
Their goal is to redistribute money to amazing BIPOC-led anti-racist activist organizations in Tompkins County. Every month, they share raised money evenly among these organizations:

Flexible unrestricted funding continues to be greatly appreciated by our local mission-driven sector.
11 Donor Advised Funds responded with $101,205 along with five Field of Interest Funds fueling grants for $65,282. Additionally, the Triad Foundation picked up 5 grants totaling $36,500!
Recently, we put a magnifying lens to Donor Advisors who account for between 57% to 78% of grants made! We learned why they give and how they perceive the Foundation’s role in their giving.
We used a qualitative evaluation approach called Ripple Effects Mapping (REM) to understand intended and unintended results of our work with fund advisors. Each month, we will feature a theme of what we learned. Here is what our fund advisors said...
Theme #1: SIMPLICITY
“We wanted to plant seeds not only in our community, but within our own family. The surprise is that the community foundation made it so easy.”
“My life has more important things than to track and manage funds…a great place to put these funds and not have to worry about them.”
“Funded through your IRA, it is a lot easier than you think.”
“I just kept combining things to have to deal with fewer funds, so management was easier.”
“I needed to have a little tax write off, so I got a hold of George…”
