They are some of our most instantly recognizable birds, but how well do you really know the birds that excavate their own homes or reuse tree cavities made by others? Look for woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, bluebirds, tree swallows and more. Expert birders also will discuss some of the nonnative birds that compete for
cavity space, and things you can do to help.

Summertime is Bat Time! Through slides, songs and games we'll learn about these misunderstood mammals and the important role they play in our local environment. As the sun sets we'll head outside to view the wild bats that call Hickory Knolls home.

Also known as lightning bugs, these fascinating insects are neither flies nor bugs! Best known for their ability to generate a cool and efficient light, those magical flashes are only a small part of the firefly's story. Join us for an engaging daytime presentation that brings their secret life to light. Held at Pottawatomie Community Center.

You may have walked them, you may have birded them, but when was the last time you visited St. Charles' natural areas by kayak? Join the District's ace naturalists on this leisurely paddle down the Fox River, with stops at some of our most outstanding native communities. Held at Pottawatomie Park.

The Hickory Knolls Discovery Center is a 10,500 sq. ft. building featuring a spacious lobby that soars
more than 20 feet in height, with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame views of the oak savanna just
outside the doors. Audio visual technology and wifi available. Access to nature center exhibits and
grounds including native gardens and more than 130 acres of natural areas.

Available weekdays, evenings and weekends. Kitchen available at an additional fee.
