It’s a busy time of year for high school admissions as we lead up to the 8th grade High School Placement Test (HSPT) on Saturday, December 3, 20022. We have created a compendium of high school open houses and opportunities to support our St. Barnabas middle school families with their decision-making process. This is not an exhaustive list of school options, but a guide to some of the Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools that are traditionally well-attended by our St. Barnabas students.

In addition to open house visits, shadow days are a popular and beneficial experience for students when considering a high school. Shadow days require pre-approval from St. Barnabas School if your child plans to miss a day of class; they also require advance scheduling through the high school. Each high school is unique in its shadow offerings, and some schools only allow for current 8th grade students, while others allow 6th-8th grades to shadow.

Schools often host admissions events for more specialized student interests, including honors/AP courses, theater, music, sports, Model UN, and STEM. Details are available through their admissions website.

Many students find visiting a high school through a summer camp opportunity is also beneficial when narrowing their choices. For our 6th and 7th grade students, look for high schools to begin posting their summer offerings in late winter/early spring.
