HSHT Students Attend Tallahassee State College Transition Fair to Help Plan for their Future

The Tallahassee State College (TSC) Student Accessibility Services Office, The Able Trust and Project10 Transition Education Network partnered this year on the 5th Annual Transition Fair.

This was TSC's fifth year, partnering with The Able Trust and bringing High School High Tech students on campus to visit. This is an important event where our students visit the TSC campus to learn more about postsecondary programs they may want to consider as they think about their future career goals.

This year, High School High Tech students from Leon, Madison and Wakulla counties attended the half-day fair to meet staff from TSC as well as representatives from Project10, Florida Alliance for Assistive Services and Technology (FAAST) and the Agency for Persons with Disabilities.

According to TSC President Jim Murdaugh, At Tallahassee State College, we are committed to creating pathways to success for all students, and the Transition Fair is an important part of that. Partnering with The Able Trust allows us to provide valuable resources and guidance to high school students with disabilities, helping them explore opportunities for higher education and career training. We are proud to host this event and to work alongside organizations that share our dedication to student success and workforce development.”

Students indicated by participating in the TSC Transition Fair, they learned about financial aid, counseling services and other resources, and the wide variety of programs TSC offers. Some of the programs they expressed an interest in included nursing, occupational therapy and computer coding.

After a tour of TSC, HSHT State Director Coleen Agner led them the Marshmallow Challenge, an activity during which students worked together to build a structure using marshmallows.

During the activity, they discussed the importance of a strong foundation of support that is needed to build successful futures. The TSC Transition Fair was a great example of the resources they have available that will help them gain access to post-secondary education.

The photos below show a few highlights from the day and additional photos are available on The Able Trust website.

Congratulations to District Teacher of the Year

Hardee County honored its education professionals recently at the annual banquet to recognize its top educational support professionals and teachers from around the county. Student Success Story - Jamina

Jamina is a 17 year old student who is passionate about technology and video games. She will be the first generation in her family to graduate high school, and she struggled with feeling empowered to decide her future and explore career interests.

Jamina joined High School High Tech after attending a VR Pre-ETS program. She has learned how to be independent despite her visual disability. She also joined the robotics program at her high school and has developed communication and public speaking skills to advocate for her future. High School High Tech provides Jamina with career exploration activities and work experiences, and she plans to continue her education and pursue a career in computer engineering.

High School High Tech Site Highlights

During the recent College Night presentation, ECMC Group provided attendees with a wealth of information about choosing the right school and program of study, setting achievable education goals, how to find key resources on campus, and more. Special congratulations to Alachua County student Myonna, who won our $1,000 scholarship drawing for student attendees! We know that money will be very useful as she plans her next steps after graduation.

Broward County helped connect high school students with disabilities to career exploration activities, postsecondary education options, and skills development in a recent tour of a fire station. This recent fire station tour led by the Broward Sheriff's Office provided real-world insights about in-demand career fields, helping these students learn about a career option they might not have considered.

Students with the Duval HSHT program experienced what it's like on a Coast Guard Cutter. For several students, this was their first time on any type of boat, and they learned about the various jobs that are available and the benefits of enlisting in the Coast Guard. Students also learned that no experience is needed and the Coast Guard provides training and on-the-job experience.
