Hello! My name is Karen Frederick and I will be teaching American Sign Language, also known as ASL. It is a beautiful and expressive language which I hope you will come to love as I do! I have taught deaf children for many years in NM, TX, and here in Florida at FSDB and at Brandon High School. I have also taught ASL to many different groups, including First Responders.
I earned my BA in Deaf/Elem Education at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD and my MA in Secondary Education – Advanced Studies at UNF in Jacksonville. I currently help to homeschool my six grandchildren and they take classes here at HEAT as well!
For the coming school year I am pleased to offer the following Courses:
ASL 1
10:15-11:45 AM
Thursdays, Beginning in August
This beginner’s course for American Sign Language is meant for high school credit, but mature middle schoolers are welcome. Focus will be on learning the basic structure and vocabulary of ASL, with emphasis on expressive and receptive skills. We will also learn about Deaf culture, hearing loss and some common idioms of the language. Students will participate in dialogues, presentations, songs, games and classroom discussions.
Registration is $300 for the 9-month course. A non-refundable deposit (unless we cancel the class) of $50 will hold your spot! You may pay via PayPal, drop payment in the Homeschool Resource Center or mail to Tampa Bay HEAT, 1011 Knowles Rd. Brandon, 33511. Balance will be paid directly to the teacher by the first day of class.
You will also need to purchase a text and its accompanying workbook: A Basic Course in American Sign Language 2nd Edition. You can buy it new or used on Amazon, at TJ Publishers, or other locations.
ASL 2
8:30-10:00 AM
Thursdays, Beginning in August
This course for high school credit is for students who have already taken ASL I. We will continue to refine receptive and expressive signing abilities, be exposed to a variety of signers, delve into famous Deaf Americans, ASL storytelling, and be encouraged to participate in Deaf Culture events.
Registration is $325 for the 9-month course. A non-refundable deposit (unless we cancel the class) of $50 will hold your spot! Balance will be paid directly to the teacher by the first day of class.
No text required. Students will be provided with DVDs to be used in their personal computers.
