Join us the path to the Science Fair!

Whether you are several steps down the path or still figuring out where to start, MSEF has the resources and support to help out!

  • Are you still struggling with picking a research topic? Watch this video to hear former MSEF Intern Suvin give some tips on how to develop a testable question that works for you.

  • Do you need to create your research plan, but you're unsure of what format to use? Try using one of our Research Plan Templates available for download on our High School Fairs page.

  • Have you completed your research plan and are ready to register on zFairs, but you could use a refresher? Check out this tutorial video and this slideshow for guidance.

  • Have you made some progress on your project but are unsure about what steps to take next? Click on this link to access the Science Fair Ready Checklist, which maps out all the path to complete your project and prepare for participation in a Fair.

Beyond these resources, you can find many more via MSEF's website - https://scifair.com/.

Does your plan follow every step?

As you map out your project plan, make sure that you are following all steps of the science research process or engineering design steps. Click on the orange poster and use it as a guide through the steps. Additionally, download the Science or Engineering Handbooks at scifair.com/resources.

Tips to take your project further:

  • Make sure that your project is more than just research or a demonstration (check out the orange poster).
  • Consider the 'social significance' of your project? Why is it worth researching? What larger issues does it connect to?
  • Explore topics like biomimicry, assistive technologies, or the UN Sustainable Development goals for connections to your project area that you can build on.
  • Check out the judges rubric to know what judges will be looking for and to confirm you are 'covering' each aspect.
