CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE ON HIGHER EDUCATION TO HOLD HEARING ON "THE COLLEGE SCORECARD": DOES IT MEET THE MARK?
New York, NY-On Wednesday, September 25th at 10am, the NYC Council Committee on Higher Education will examine the Obama Administration's new National College Scorecard. The oversight hearing will help to determine whether this tool is truly helpful to New York City high school students in assessing their options at the college level.
Questions remain as to whether the scorecard, which is meant to serve as a comprehensive college measuring resource for prospective students, accurately and effectively determines a school's qualities. The College Scorecard measures a school's price, graduation rate, loan default rate, median student borrowing, post-graduate employment and salary and programs offered. Critics contend that the scorecard places small liberal arts schools at a disadvantage due to majors that are not directly related to designated careers and because it does not take into account student satisfaction or long-term success.
Expected to testify at the hearing will be CUNY Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost, Alexandra W. Logue, as well as other CUNY administration officials; Rachel Fishman of the New Foundation of America; Monica Foote, President of the Long Island Business Institute; Tony Bieda, of the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools; and others.
