NYC COUNCIL, DISTRICT 10
Upcoming Events:
Dear Friend,
Please join me and the New York City Council Higher Education Committee as we hold and oversight hearing titled "The Impact of Online Learning in Higher Education" at 1pm on Tuesday, April 23rd on the 14th floor of 250 Broadway.
Institutions of higher learning are increasingly embracing online education, and the number of students enrolled in online learning programs is rapidly rising in colleges and universities across the United States. Approximately 6.7 million students are enrolled in online programs. In fact, enrollment in online classes doubled between 2007 and 2011. Online course offerings seem popular among community colleges and some for-profit institutions. There are differing opinions among educators about the quality of online education. In the past year, there has also been a growing interest in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which are free courses offered to the public by institutions such as MIT and Harvard.
The Committee will explore the benefits and challenges of online education. Areas of focus will include academic outcomes, including graduation and retention rates, employment outcomes, availability of online instructors, access to academic counselors and other resources. The Committee will also seek to learn which fields of study are best suited for online instruction and which are not. The Committee will also explore how online education can be improved as it continues to grow and how it might impact the future of higher education. In addition, the Committee will examine the progress of CUNY's online program since it began in 2006.
Those interested in attending and presenting testimony should RSVP with my Legislative & Budget Director, Ms. Carmen De La Rosa by calling 212-788-7053 or emailing cdelarosa@council.nyc.gov
Hope to see you all there!
