Dear Giant Family,
Tonight the board approved the recommendation to hire Mark Ribbens to lead Highland Park Athletics into its next chapter due to Paul Harris’s retirement. His extensive experience, proven success, and genuine passion for our community make him uniquely qualified to serve as our next Athletic Director. With 22 years in education, including 11 years leading athletic programs at Wauconda and Larkin High Schools, Mark brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role. He has a demonstrable track record of improving athletic programs, as evidenced by a 31% participation increase at Wauconda after implementing the "Play 2/Play 3" program designed to promote multi-sport participation. He also spearheaded facility renovations at both Wauconda and Larkin, demonstrating his commitment to providing athletes with the best possible resources. Mark's commitment to enhancing the student-athlete experience is clear through initiatives like the implementation of student athletic experience surveys to gather feedback and the creation of an Athletic Leadership Council to foster leadership skills among student-athletes.
Beyond his qualifications, Mark's passion for Highland Park resonated strongly during the interview process. He articulated a compelling vision for our athletic program, emphasizing data-driven decision-making through robust program evaluation and feedback loops, and a commitment to equity and access for all students. Mark Ribbens possesses the experience, the proven success, the innovative mindset, the demonstrated commitment to student well-being, the passion for Highland Park, and the vision necessary to lead Highland Park Athletics to new heights, and he should be our next Athletic Director.
At the core of Mark's leadership philosophy is a commitment to education-based athletics, where participation outcomes are paramount. He believes in creating an inclusive and supportive environment that breaks down barriers, allowing every athlete to grow and succeed. His vision includes providing equal access to resources, high-quality coaching, and flexible practice schedules to accommodate academic and personal commitments. Mark emphasizes sportsmanship, fostering an environment where athletes learn to lose with dignity and model appropriate behaviors. He champions multi-sport participation, diverse coaching experiences, and the recognition of athlete achievements. He is dedicated to the professional development of coaches, aligning with initiatives around inclusion and fostering transformational coaching, empathic leadership, and ethical decision-making. Ultimately, Mark believes that athletics should foster a sense of belonging, build self-confidence, enhance self-discipline and problem-solving skills, and improve academic performance.
Mark shared the following as he plans to join our team,“I am thrilled to join the outstanding staff at Highland Park High School and look forward to building strong relationships with the staff, caregivers, community members, and student athletes. My goal is to lead HP athletics into its next chapter, while fostering a culture of cohesion and inclusion for all student athletes. I will work closely with Mr. Paul Harris to ensure a smooth transition and a united vision for the program’s future.”
Mark is thrilled to be joining the Giant leadership team! He is excited to immerse himself into the diverse Highland Park High School culture of students, staff, and caregivers, and looks forward to collaborating with us to make many positive contributions to the Giant community.
