Highlands Monitors the Coronavirus
The Highlands Administration has been carefully monitoring the news concerning the coronavirus (COVID-19). Given the current information, we want to share what is being done at Highlands to prevent illness and to keep our students and staff educated on best practices for prevention.
Our goal is to provide a healthy and clean environment in our school. We have been monitoring the communication from the CDC and the State of Florida for updates and recommendations. Presently, the recommendations are for us to keep our current protocol in the classrooms and common areas of the school with cleaning and hygiene practices.
Please review the information in the following link that the Broward School District has put together concerning COVID-19:

First and foremost in maintaining a healthy school community is preventing the spread of communicable (contagious) diseases. As outlined in the Highlands Parent & Student Guidelines, ill children should not be in school. Students who come to school ill will be sent home. Parents are encouraged to formulate a plan ahead of time for the care of their students if they become ill.
If your child has a fever, cough, and/or difficulty breathing, please call your doctor immediately.
If your child is diagnosed with coronavirus or another communicable illness, it is essential that you inform the main school office at 954-421-1747.
WHAT HIGHLANDS IS DOING
Our staff is taking increased measures in cleaning buildings, classrooms, restrooms, locker room, weight areas, and buses. We have increased signage around campus regarding proper hygiene practices, and we are encouraging/reminding students and staff in proper handwashing techniques.
WHAT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY SHOULD DO
- Please keep your child home if he or she has a fever. Your child must not return to school until the temperature is normal for 24 hours without medication. For the sake of your children and others around them, please do not medicate your children and send them to school.
- Avoid close contact with ill people.
- Cover mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing or coughing.
Demonstrate to your children how to cover nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. They should throw the tissue away after use and wash their hands. If a tissue is not available, they should not use their hands. They should cover their mouth and nose with their sleeve.
Wash hands often with proper handwashing techniques and/or use hand sanitizers.
According to the CDC, proper handwashing with soap and water is one of the best ways to prevent illness. Demonstrate proper handwashing for 20 seconds to your children. Refer to these CDC guidelines on handwashing.
Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth.
- Do not share eating utensils, drinking glasses, or other personal items.
- Refer to this CDC link if you have questions about traveling abroad.
We will continue to monitor the news and provide updates as needed. Please join us in prayer for this situation and for those in our community who may come into contact with the virus. If you have any questions on the material provided above, please contact the school office.
