STEM Camp
Over spring break, we partnered with Indian River State College and Florida Power and Light to offer Club members the opportunity to discover the future of technology through fun, engaging, and educational STEM experiences. STEM camp was a fun way to teach and develop valuable 21st-century skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Some of the activities involved working with drones, wind turbines, a solar farm tour, and building electrical circuits with just a few items like batteries, wires, LED bulbs, and Playdoh.
Opportunities like this would not be possible without generous support and partners. Thank you IRSC and FPL, we are grateful for your support and vision.

Tough Talks
Ensuring Club members have the tools to be safe beyond our blue doors and become caring citizens often means talking about difficult subjects, like teen dating violence. Did you know one in three teens in the US will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from someone they know before they are adults? (Source: loveisrespect.org)
During Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, Club staff worked with our teens to "talk about it" and supported them by engaging in meaningful conversations about healthy relationships.
After their discussions, they created a "Love Is" board. Members wrote on a pre-cut heart what love means to them and what love should look like.

Better Together
Club life isn't just for members. It's for their families too. Once a month, families are invited into the Clubs for fun and the opportunity to learn something new.
Partnering with the University of Florida/IFAS Martin County Extension Office, a recent family night explored how to eat healthy at home and while dining out. After learning helpful tips about healthy eating, preparing favorite ingredients healthier, and making smarter choices, each family member made an apple banana wrap.
The evening ended with everyone enjoying a smart and yummy snack when they combined peanut butter, bananas, and chopped apples on a whole wheat tortilla.

YOUTH OF THE YEAR, WINNER ANNOUNCED!
|
|
Amid all the typical fanfare befitting the most prestigious award ceremonies and shows, Fredd Galvez won Youth of the Year 2022. Selected from three outstanding youths representing three of our Clubs, Galvez, an immigrant from Peru, will represent Martin County at the state competition later in April.
"The Youth of the Year program illustrates perfectly the incredible impact of the Boys & Girls Clubs mission: inspiring and enabling young people," says Youth of the Year Judge Sue Kinane, CEO of Kinane Commercial Printing and Children's Services Council of Martin County board member.
During the event, Galvez's story caught the attention of businessman and architect Raul Ocampo from ADC Architects. "When Fredd spoke about his difficult journey to America, and what the Clubs mean to him and his family, I was touched. And then, when he shared that he wanted to pursue a degree in architecture, I had to step up and help this young man with his dream." Following the event, Ocampo reached out to Galvez and Keith Fletcher, BGCMC President and CEO, to arrange mentoring and internship opportunities at his award-wining architecture firm this summer.
The photo features Presenting and Blue Carpet Sponsor Arati Hammond and Area Director Jeronda Hill presenting Fredd Galvez (center) his award. For more photos from this event and others, check out our photo galleries on the BGCMC website.

Justin Simmons Foundation
On March 10, three-time Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee, Denver Bronco's safety Justin Simmons hosted an evening of fun and fundraising for local charities, including Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County.
Hailing from Martin County, Simmons and his wife Taryn are dedicated to mentoring young people, promoting the benefits of youth sports, and supporting youth education. Making the event so much more than just a fundraiser, Club members were invited to participate in the fun activities, meet Simmons himself, and receive a signed photograph. Fork in the Road, our food truck, also appeared, and Chef Dan, along with a few culinary students, served up delicious snacks and refreshments for the guests.
Everyone, including all the Club members who attended, would like to thank the Justin Simmons Foundation for their generous contribution and creating an unforgettable evening for our Club members. Go Broncos!
