2022 HIGHLIGHTS

In its 45th year, the annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium held in December 2022, in San Antonio, Texas, was a success. This symposium brought together basic scientists, researchers, clinicians, patients, and patient advocates from around the world to hear about new and late-breaking research in breast cancer and pre-malignant disease. The five days included poster presentations, special sessions and lectures covering a number of topics, including translational research, clinical trial updates, imaging, treatments, data and health equity issues, and quality of life for patients.
There were many important study updates from the symposium for treating breast cancer and I have included a few here. All presentations and abstracts and posters will be available at https://www.sabcs.org/ after March 1, 2023. I included the general session number after each write-up for your reference. If you'd like more information before March 2023, please contact me at joni@thesecondopinion.org.
HER2 Positive Breast Cancer
DESTINY-Breast03
The DESTINY-Breast03 study results confirm the benefits of Enhertu for metastatic, HER2-positive breast cancer. The DESTINY-Breast03 study compared Enhertu (fam-trastuzumab-deruxtecan-nxki) with Kadcyla (chemical name: T-DM1 or ado-trastuzumab emtansine) for previously treated metastatic, HER2-positive disease. These new results underscore earlier ones showing Enhertu offers better progression-free survival than Kadcyla and strongly suggests that Enhertu also provides better overall survival.

THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING
James Gorder, M.D.
|
|
On February 3, 2023, Dr. James Gorder participated on his last second opinion panel. He has been volunteering with thesecondopinion for over 16 years and his participation and expertise in radiology has helped hundreds of cancer patients.
As a volunteer radiologist with thesecondopinion, it was Dr. Gorder's job to review the patients images and explain his findings not only to the volunteer physicians participating on the panel, but to the patient. Often and when appropriate, Dr. Gorder would share images with the patients, explaining each detail. For some patients' this was the first time seeing their images.
Dr. Gorder's commitment to the organization and his generous support year after year have contributed to the success of thesecondopinion and made a huge impact on our patients. He will be greatly missed.
The Staff and Volunteers wish Dr. Gorder all the best in his new endeavors!
