ECLECTIC HOMESCHOOLING

Taking an Eclectic Approach to History

Studying history does not need to be boring. There are so many opportunities to bring it to life, no matter where you live. I had wonderful experiences with history as a youth. I enjoyed history so much that I decided I wanted to be a history teacher when I grew up. As I got older, I realized that not everyone had good experiences with history . . .

In Defense of Boring

I’d like to say that all my memories of homeschooling are fun ones, but that would be a lie. Don’t get me wrong; I’m very glad I was homeschooled. I can point to tons of ways it benefitted me both then and now. But, as anyone who’s had dental work done knows . . .

Mixing and Matching Structured and Unstructured Homeschooling

As a self-described Type A personality, I thought I had my son’s education mapped out when I was five months pregnant. Well, he’s 24 years old now and just typing that sentence I snickered at myself. It’s just that even before he was born . . .

Home Educating in the Military: A Testimonial

When we began home education, we set it up just like school: a school room, daily schedule, yearly calendar, boxed curriculum by grade, etc. The longer our journey continues, the more educationally ineffective schooling paradigms we have shed, as we become increasingly eclectic.

Eclectic Homeschooling

What on earth does that mean? Traveling a Blazed Trail: Second-Generation Homeschooling

When my parents began homeschooling in 1996, home education was still pretty much in its infancy, at least in our area. My mother had to educate the local board of education about homeschooling and about the state laws regarding it. Homeschooling was on the fringe, and those who took the monumental step of pulling their kids out of traditional schooling faced challenges equal to the importance of their decision.

Greek 'n' Stuff

Four-year-old Andrew was curious, quickly absorbing all his world had to offer. Karen Mohs wanted her nephew's Christmas gift to be something Andrew would treasure for years to come. Her background in koine (biblical) Greek provided the answer. Catchy rhymes were written, photos were taken and edited, and so the Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! Reader was born.

For weeks, Andrew carried his Greek alphabet book tucked under his arm, showing it to everyone he met.

At the request of the headmaster of a local Christian school, Karen wrote the Level 1 workbook. Now the eight book series is complete. Every year, many families embark on an exciting adventure, the study of koine Greek.
