NATURE STUDIES / FIELD TRIPS

Rise and Shine with Field Trips

Is grocery shopping a field trip? It is, according to a sweet mom I once chatted with in the checkout lane. "Do you homeschool?" I asked, though I knew the answer; my homeschool radar is pretty accurate. Plus, she was shopping in the middle of the day, trailed by a line of little daughters. "We do! It’s field trip day today," she told me proudly. "We take one every week."

Rise and Shine! Spanish Morning Time

This year I am doing a Spanish nature study with my three small children. Since I wanted them all to participate and learn Spanish when everyone is happy and rested, using the nature study as a morning time made the most sense.

Nature Studies and Field Trips: Learning Outside the Classroom

One of the greatest science classrooms God created is right outside your door. Nature studies and simple field trips help children slow down, observe carefully, and discover the incredible design found in plants, animals, and the world around them.

To help families get started, we’re sharing free Nature Journaling and Classification printables from SchoolhouseTeachers.com. These resources include a devotional reflection for moms, a Nature Journal page for recording outdoor observations, and a Plant and Animal Classification worksheet that introduces basic taxonomy. A fun activity invites students to sort items they find outdoors into the major Kingdoms, making science both hands-on and memorable.

If your children enjoy learning outdoors, SchoolhouseTeachers.com offers even more ways to explore. Nature/Outdoors (Grades 1–8) and Let’s Do Science Outside (Grades 1–4) encourage observation, journaling, and outdoor experiments. Older students can dig deeper with Botany: Plant Science and Field Studies (Grades 7–10), available to members through SchoolhouseTeachers.com and also offered to nonmembers as an ST å la Carte course in The Old Schoolhouse® Homeschool Store.

Three Best Practices for Nature Journaling

When I was 8 years old, my mother decided to homeschool my older brother and me. At the time we were traveling with an evangelistic crusade ministry across the Midwest United States.
