Mellon Square Development

Within the last five years, the area surrounding the newly restored Mellon Square Park has undergone a major transformation. Previously, many buildings around the park were vacant. Now, it abounds with new hotels, restaurants, and residential spaces. As a result of these recent additions, Mellon Square could become the next great downtown destination for residents and tourists alike.

Mellon Square now hosts three amazing hotels, bringing more visitors and their business to the Golden Triangle than ever before. The Omni William Penn Hotel, which has been in existence since 1916, now offers amenities such as the Wigle Whiskey Tasting room along with its refined lobby and rooms. The Kimpton Group introduced the trendy Hotel Monaco to Pittsburgh in 2015, which has achieved success with its popular in-house restaurant, The Commoner. A year later, The Embassy Suites by Hilton opened in the Henry W. Oliver Building, giving tourists a more affordable option in the heart of the city. The hospitality boom in Mellon Square ensures that there will always be a place to sleep and eat downtown, no matter one's preferences for price and style.

The restaurant scene around Mellon Square has also been growing rapidly. There has always been a plethora of classics, like Eddie V's Prime Seafood, The Capital Grille, and McCormick and Schmick's. However, in the last three years, multiple new eateries have opened their doors. When the Embassy Suites launched, an onsite restaurant called Ollie's Gastropub opened along with it. In 2017, the area gained both Talia Cucina Rosticceria, serving upscale modern Italian cuisine, and Union Standard, a contemporary American eatery. Coming soon this year, Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steakhouse will be taking its place in the Union Trust Building. Like the new options in hotels, these restaurants diversify the choices that can be made for lunch or dinner.

Along with the influx of people coming to stay and eat around Mellon Square, there is also an increase in those who wish to live there permanently. The PMC Property Group has residences at the Historic Alcoa Building and Lumière has renovated the old Saks Fifth Avenue site into brand new condominiums for purchase. Occupancy is planned for late 2019 and both buildings propose 1, 2, and 3-bedroom floor plans.
Lighting Project Meeting

On Thursday May 23 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. the City of Pittsburgh's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) will be holding a meeting open to the public concerning the new Fourth Avenue lighting project. Bids from possible contractors are still being received, with a deadline of May 24th at 10 a.m. The area in question is between 200 Fourth Avenue and Smithfield Street. The event will be held at Point Park University; details including the exact building will be released soon. For more information or questions, contact DOMI's project manager, Mike Panzitta, at (412) - 255 - 0816.
