Highway 105A Construction UPDATE

August 25, 2023

The El Paso County Highway 105A Construction project is ongoing and motorists will experience substantial construction activity in the area.

Night work on Hwy 105 will continue through the end of September.  Hwy 105 will remain open, but some lane restrictions will be required for the work. The traffic configuration will return to the daytime traffic pattern by 7 a.m. daily.

The full closure of Knollwood at Village Ridge Point and opening of the paved temporary access to Village Ridge Point has been postponed until after Labor Day weekend. A new date for this traffic shift will be communicated in a later enewsletter.

Until that closure of Knollwood at Village Ridge Point goes into effect:

  1. Southbound Knollwood Drive left turns onto eastbound Village Ridge Point are NOT allowed.
  2. Westbound left out of Village Ridge Point onto southbound Knollwood is also NOT allowed.
  3. Traffic wanting access to Monument Academy and the businesses along Village Ridge Point are required to access from northbound Knollwood with right-in only to Village Ridge Point.
  4. Access to Village Ridge Point: take Lake Woodmoor Drive to Highway 105, then to northbound Knollwood and then turn right onto Village Ridge Point.
  5. Exit from Village Ridge Point: no left turn onto Knollwood allowed; turn right onto Knollwood and either turn right or left onto Lake Woodmoor Drive.

Reminder: Monument Academy School has restarted bringing an increase of traffic during these school drop-off/pick-up times.

  • Mondays – Thursdays: 7 – 8:30 a.m. and 2:45 – 3:45 p.m.
  • Fridays: 7 – 8:30 a.m. and 11:45 – 12:45 p.m.

In addition to the Hwy 105A project, there are several other roadway and utility construction projects ongoing within this area. For these reasons, ALTERNATE ROUTES, IF POSSIBLE, ARE HIGHLY ADVISED.

We recognize the inconveniences for the traveling public. The project team appreciates how drivers have been slowing through the construction zone and following traffic control signs. Thank you for this and for your ongoing courtesy to other drivers trying to merge.  We are continually monitoring traffic control and making changes as needed to minimize impacts as much as possible.

Other work: Here’s what crews have been doing this week:

  1. water quality pond excavation ongoing
  2. utility work ongoing
  3. surveying and installing erosion control along the project boundaries ongoing

Construction of Hwy 105 improvements will continue early into 2025.

Work on the north side lanes of Hwy 105 will take place for approximately one year. Then traffic will be shifted to the completed north side lanes to enable work to take place on the south side.

For the safety of the travelling public and construction crews:

  1. Please slow down and pay attention to signs and traffic control.
  2. Watch for workers and vehicles in the construction zone.
  3. Adhere to posted speed limit signs.
  4. Be considerate to drivers wanting to merge in.
  5. Your patience is greatly appreciated!
  6. Slower traffic is the best way to avoid accidents. But, if an accident does occur within the construction zone, and it is safe to do so, please stay out of the road and traffic; try to pull over and get to a side road.
  7. Your patience is greatly appreciated!

MULTIPLE ROADWAY AND UTILITY PROJECTS

There are multiple roadway and utility projects both underway and planned for this area of the community being led by different jurisdictions. The project teams are coordinating efforts to minimize impacts to the traveling public as much as is possible.

Monument Junction Interim Improvements (Project A) – Classic Homes (Construction completion: anticipated for late summer 2023)

Paving operations for Phase 1 (east side, northbound lane of Jackson Creek Parkway). This “Interim” project by Classic Homes and contractor Wildcat Construction will see approximately 2,600 linear feet of Jackson Creek Parkway street improvements including widening for several new turn lanes, drive access to development areas, signage, and striping.

The “Ultimate Improvements” (Project D) to this northern section of Jackson Creek Parkway will take place during the Town of Monument’s Jackson Creek Parkway Widening Project estimated to start construction in late 2024.

Highway 105A Construction (Project B) – El Paso County (Construction duration: July 24, 2023 – expected to continue into 2025)

The project extends the 4-lane section of Highway 105 just east of Jackson Creek Parkway to Lake Woodmoor Drive, providing for greater mobility by accommodating more traffic. The new configuration will be two lanes in each direction with left and right turn lanes. The project also includes multi-use shoulders and pedestrian improvements, sidewalk connectivity, replacement of the traffic signal at Knollwood Boulevard, a new underground drainage system, and water quality pond, and a new roundabout at the Knollwood/Village Ridge Point intersection.

The new roundabout coupled with new queuing lanes being constructed by Monument Academy are designed to keep traffic moving and reduce the traffic backups on Highway 105 that have previously occurred in this area.

Jackson Creek Parkway Widening (Project E) – Town of Monument (Construction duration, expected late 2024 - 2026)

This project, currently in design, will expand Jackson Creek Parkway from one lane in each direction to two lanes in each direction (from Higby Road north to Highway 105), extending the four-lane configuration. Also included are drainage improvements, median landscaping, pedestrian and bike pathways, and “Gateway” treatments.
