Highway 105A Construction UPDATE

September 1, 2023

We realize the inconveniences that construction impacts have as motorists try to get to and from work, home, school, and various appointments. El Paso County thanks the traveling public for your ongoing patience as we work to minimize impacts as best we can.

El Paso County also thanks the Town of Monument, especially the uniformed traffic control officers, Colorado Department of Transportation, and the utility companies in the area, for their ongoing coordination throughout this project.

The project team continues to hear and listen to concerns expressed by citizens, and we have been implementing modifications to traffic control throughout the project area to minimize construction impacts as much as possible.

Traffic control modification to be implemented the week of September 4:

The right turn lane from eastbound Hwy 105 to southbound Jackson Creek Parkway (JCP) will be available.

  • The southerly eastbound lane on Hwy 105 will be Right Turn Only west of JCP. Vehicles in the right turn lane will be forced to turn right onto southbound JCP.
  • Traffic continuing eastbound through the JCP intersection will stay left or merge left between the Interstate-25 off-ramp and JCP.
  • The single eastbound Hwy 105 through lane will shift south on the east side of JCP.

Reminder: Navigating Merged Lanes (Eastbound on Hwy 105, west of Jackson Creek Pkwy)

There are two lanes on Hwy 105 heading eastbound. Continue to drive in open lanes equally. Just before the lane ends, motorists should take turns carefully merging zipper fashion into the open lanes just before the point of closure. (See tips for “How a Zipper Merge Works” below)

The Zipper Merge | Tips to Keep Traffic Moving

How a Zipper Merge Works: Merge points are specifically set up for vehicles to merge from two lanes into one lane in a zipper fashion. This keeps traffic flowing. Each car should alternate zipper fashion into the remaining open lane just before the point of closure.

When there is a lane closure ahead, drivers should continue to drive in both lanes equally. Just before the lane ends, cars should take turns filling in the open lane carefully and resume full speed. In a Zipper Merge, please be respectful of those who wait to merge until just before the lane ends; they are doing it correctly.

Check out this short CDOT video on merging. https://www.codot.gov/travel/zippermerge

Night work on Hwy 105 will continue through the end of September. Hwy 105 will remain open, but some lane restrictions will be required for the work. The traffic configuration will

return to the daytime traffic pattern by 7 a.m. daily.

The full closure of Knollwood at Village Ridge Point and opening of the paved temporary access to Village Ridge Point has been postponed until after Labor Day weekend. A new date for this traffic shift will be communicated in a later enewsletter.

ALTERNATE ROUTES, IF POSSIBLE, ARE HIGHLY ADVISED.

For the safety of the traveling public and construction crews:

  1. Please slow down and pay attention to signs and traffic control.
  2. Watch for workers and vehicles in the construction zone.
  3. Adhere to posted speed limit signs.
  4. Be considerate to drivers wanting to merge in.
  5. Your patience is greatly appreciated!
  6. Slower traffic is the best way to avoid accidents. But, if an accident does occur within the construction zone, and it is safe to do so, please stay out of the road and traffic; try to pull over and get to a side road.
  7. Your patience is greatly appreciated!

MULTIPLE ROADWAY AND UTILITY PROJECTS

There are multiple roadway and utility projects both underway and planned for this area of the community being led by different jurisdictions. The project teams are coordinating efforts to minimize impacts to the traveling public as much as is possible.

Monument Junction Interim Improvements (Project A) – Classic Homes (Construction completion: anticipated for late summer 2023)

Paving operations for Phase 1 (east side, northbound lane of Jackson Creek Parkway). This “Interim” project by Classic Homes and contractor Wildcat Construction will see approximately 2,600 linear feet of Jackson Creek Parkway street improvements including widening for several new turn lanes, drive access to development areas, signage, and striping.

The “Ultimate Improvements” (Project D) to this northern section of Jackson Creek Parkway will take place during the Town of Monument’s Jackson Creek Parkway Widening Project estimated to start construction in late 2024.

Highway 105A Construction (Project B) – El Paso County (Construction duration: July 24, 2023 – expected to continue into 2025)

The project extends the 4-lane section of Highway 105 just east of Jackson Creek Parkway to Lake Woodmoor Drive, providing for greater mobility by accommodating more traffic. The new configuration will be two lanes in each direction with left and right turn lanes. The project also includes multi-use shoulders and pedestrian improvements, sidewalk connectivity, replacement of the traffic signal at Knollwood Boulevard, a new underground drainage system, and water quality pond, and a new roundabout at the Knollwood/Village Ridge Point intersection.

The new roundabout coupled with new queuing lanes being constructed by Monument Academy are designed to keep traffic moving and reduce the traffic backups on Highway 105 that have previously occurred in this area.

Jackson Creek Parkway Widening (Project E) – Town of Monument (Construction duration, expected late 2024 - 2026)

This project, currently in design, will expand Jackson Creek Parkway from one lane in each direction to two lanes in each direction (from Higby Road north to Highway 105), extending the four-lane configuration. Also included are drainage improvements, median landscaping, pedestrian and bike pathways, and “Gateway” treatments.
