HIGHWOOD IN MOTION:
LOOKING BACK. LOOKING AHEAD.

Who Owns History?
When a museum object has a complicated past, who gets to decide where it belongs?
On October 14, historian Dr. Caroline Malloy brings that question to Spill Sessions at Disotto, exploring the fascinating and often contentious stories behind the Parthenon Marbles, Benin Bronzes and other cultural treasures whose ownership is still being debated today.
It is a conversation happening around the world, and right here in Chicago. Come curious.

Highwood Design Week Opened in a Big Way
Photos by Caleb Viti
Nearly 300 people gathered at Old Plank Antiques to kick off Highwood Design Week and four days celebrating the theme, Design Is Everywhere.
It was exactly what we hoped Opening Night would be: an evening that brought together residents, designers, architects, business owners and visitors from across the North Shore while showcasing some of what makes Highwood special.
Old Plank provided an extraordinary backdrop for the evening, with guests enjoying a preview from avec, Italian wines from Cream Wine Company, Verde Springs water, music from 4 Sure Entertainment and a special gift from Hotel Chocolat.
Most importantly, the evening set the tone for the week ahead: people moving through Highwood, discovering businesses, meeting one another and experiencing our community in a different way.
Thank you to everyone who helped us start Highwood Design Week on such a high note. A special thank you to North Shore City Lifestyle for helping us share the excitement and spirit of the week with the community.

Living in a Better Light
Photos by Bobby C Productions
Wednesday evening brought Highwood Design Week to ABLAZE Design Group for Living in a Better Light, an engaging look at how lighting can transform the way we experience our homes.
Together with Lutron and Davis Audio & Video, the ABLAZE team demonstrated how thoughtful lighting, technology and design can work together to make our spaces more beautiful, functional and comfortable.
Guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while seeing the technology in action and discovering just how much good lighting can change a room.

Design from the Ground Up
Photos by Payton Carter Media
Who knew flooring could inspire an entire evening? At Carpets of Highwood, Whiskey, Vinyl & Textures proved that what is underfoot can be every bit as important to a room as what is on the walls.
Some guests explored the carpeting and design samples, while others mingled over food and drinks, enjoying an evening that brought people together in a setting filled with texture, color and pattern.
And there was plenty to enjoy along the way, with meatballs and bruschette from Bella Via, cannoli and cookies from Maria’s, and whiskey and wine from The Merchant.

Ribbon Cutting - La Unión
photos by Jennifur Condon
La Unión Supermarket celebrated the opening of its new space with the kind of ribbon cutting that quickly turned into a full-fledged celebration. Mariachi music from Las Sirenas filled the air, tacos were coming off the grill, children enjoyed activities and giveaways, and families filled the store and spilled outside. Alderpeople Joseph Nebolsky, Andy Peterson and Robyn Bauer joined the Highwood Chamber and members of the community to cut the ribbon and celebrate the growth of a longtime Highwood business. It was lively, colorful and unmistakably Highwood, and a fitting celebration of La Unión’s next chapter.

Ribbon Cutting - Fenix Family Health Center
photos by Jennifur Condon
Fenix Family Health Center had plenty to celebrate, and plenty of people showed up to celebrate with them. The opening of its expanded Highwood facility brought together State Senators Julie Morrison and Adriane Johnson, Highwood Alderpeople Andy Peterson, Joseph Nebolsky and Krista Hanson, community members and supporters, who joined Executive Director Arianna Soheil to cut the ribbon. The expansion means more than additional space. It allows Fenix to broaden its reach and provide essential healthcare services to even more families in our community.

"I see Highwood as a sophisticated contemporary mosaic. a community full of contrasts, character, and unexpected connections. Like a mosaic, its beauty comes from the individuality of its pieces, different histories, cultures, personalities, architecture, and generations existing side by side. Some elements are bold and colorful, others quiet and subtle, but together they create an identity that could not exist without each individual piece. Highwood is not perfectly uniform, and that is precisely what makes it interesting. It is layered, energetic, diverse, and constantly evolving, a living mosaic where the past and present come together to create something uniquely Highwood."
