Hiking Dog Slaughter Trail at Cumberland Falls
If you’re planning a visit to Cumberland Falls, consider hiking the Dog Slaughter Trail, one of the most scenic trails in the region. This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and adventure, making it an ideal activity for families and outdoor enthusiasts.
Overview:
Dog Slaughter Trail is a favorite among hikers for its picturesque views and serene environment. The trail features a couple of slides and cascades along the creek, leading to the stunning Dog Slaughter Falls, one of the best waterfall scenes in Kentucky. The tail end of the dry season allows for a unique 360-degree walk around and beneath the falls.
Trail Details:
- Route Type: Out and Back
- Total Distance: 2.5 miles
- Elevation Gain: 241 feet
- Overall Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
GPS Waypoints:
- Trailhead: 36.859222, -84.299825

Trail Navigation:
Begin your hike by descending and crossing the footbridge to reach the intersection with the main trail. Turn right to head west and follow along the creek. The trail descends somewhat steeply as you approach Dog Slaughter Falls. Take your time to explore the area and enjoy the falls from various vantage points around the plunge pool. When you’re ready, retrace your steps to return to the trailhead.
Safety Precautions:
- Poisonous Snakes: Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes are present in the area. If you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venomous snakes a wide berth. For more information, refer to the University of Kentucky Venomous Snake Guide.
- Black Bears: The American black bear population is growing in Kentucky. For safety tips, consult the US Forest Service Black Bear Safety Tips.
