MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIR

We have much to be thankful for in 2024.

The year started out with continuation of a tremendous effort culminating with the most successful IDIDAHIKE to date. No small challenge, signifying the depth of talent and capacity for commitment inherent in the Choctawhatchee chapter, not to mention some much needed funds. Special recognition to:

Anne Daniel - headquarters;

Bob Deckert - T shirt design;

Mary Walton - silent auction;

Notable contributions from trail leaders, drivers, tent hosts, and members of the IDIDAHIKE COMMITTEE.

Kayaking the many enticing rivers and creeks of the panhandle contributed heavily to this year’s fun and popular activities hosted by the tireless energy of Keith LeFevre. Hiking opportunities utilized several holidays and expanded by inclusion into multiple Veteran Affairs aided by Chris Nolan.

In keeping with tradition of this chapter, but never to be taken for granted, has been the hard work of keeping the trails safe and fun. This was further boosted by the successful VWP held at Pine Log state forest in October. For this we are heavily indebted to our many dedicated Trail hogs present and past.

Other Chapter Accomplishments

  1. Completion of new FTA trail manual led by Tom Daniel.
  2. Completion of the pitcher pump well near leaning pine campsite.
  3. Discovery of jasper pond beaver dam led to new improved road around the pond by Matt Aresco with Nokuse and continuation of Florida trail across the outflow with a boardwalk.
  4. Several workshops were attended by members for classes in sawyer and wilderness first aid.
  5. Chapter members recognized at the annual awards (Nathan Boyles, Keith LeFevre, and Jim Wilson).
  6. Exemplary management of the treasury duties by Richard Kersten.
  7. Michelle Duncan was elected the new Chair of FTA Board of Directors.
  8. The Panhandle has a new regional trail manager, Brandie Dziegiel.
  9. Big shout out to Steve "Goat" Fruge in Idaho, we miss you!
  10. 15 new members in 2024!

Lastly, is the progress of the Yellow River Project.

  1. Okaloosa County was awarded a $244,867 contract for bridge site selection, site survey, and bridge design.
  2. FTA Board approved $200,000 of endowment funds earmarked for project when needed.
  3. Several exploratory hikes are ongoing to establish a suitable route from Water Management District to future site of Yellow River Bridge.

Yes, this chapter has done a lot.  But the rain rains, the trees fall, the grass grows, and we get older. The work is never ending. The challenge remains for those who want to see a continuation of the past. By renewing your membership this allows our efforts to grow, enjoy the fellowship of like-minded people and experience the wonders of the FNST.

Participation is key and we need your help. If you are interested in holding a leadership position in the chapter in 2025 please send an email to Bob Deckert bobfwb@cox.net by January 6th! Elections will be held on January 28th.
