Hill Junior School: Weekly Parent Information
Literacy/ Social Science
The grade 7/8's welcomed a guest speaker into the classroom this week to talk about some health topics. Topics included healthy eating choices, environmental and ethical aspects of food choices and climate change. We learned about the impact of our choices as consumers. As teachers, we try to give students all of the current research and information to allow each individual to make the most educated decisions they can in any avenue of life. The students were quite astonished with some of the facts and figures and hands shot up to ask further questions. It will be interesting to see if any students have differing opinions or choices about health or doing their part to help keep our earth a cleaner place.

The grade 5/6s are engaged in a media literacy final project on their novel creating a book trailer in pairs. There is a lot of communication, compromise and teamwork happening as they work creatively developing each scene. Each day is another edit and upgrade when students review their trailer from many angles. Students have watched other trailers with specific techniques. Students are making sure their work is suspenseful and makes their audience ask questions.

In Social Sciences, the grade 5/6s are reviewing informational based text and exploring how information is organized. They skimmed over texts from their own group topic to discover ways in which they see information. Then they discussed if there are ways information is organized to make it easier to follow.

The grade 7/8 class is starting their geography unit. They are looking at landforms and natural resources. This week, the students reviewed vocabulary terms to get themselves acquainted with the terminology.

Math/ Science
In Math, the grade 5/6s completed their first probability quiz on representing probabilities, expectation vs actual probability, and mean, median, and mode. Next week, the class will be focusing on how to show and represent data using graphs, charts, and tables. In Science, the class worked on planning and organizing their display boards and met with Mr. Cook to double check their work. The class will be presenting their projects on Thursday, February 27th

In Math, the 7/8s were introduced to our next unit of Probability & Data Management where we reviewed the different ways to represent data and calculate probabilities. The class focused on understanding the advantages and disadvantages that each type of graph (bar, line, pie, and picto) has and when to best use each one. Next week, we will be exploring the differences between theoretical and experimental probabilities and learning how to calculate each. In Science, the class was introduced to a new assignment where each student was asked to make a presentation on a specific organelle. Next week, we will continue to work on The Cell Organelles & Structures Assignment.

Intramurals
We put their throwing skills to the test this time; dodgeball! This is how the standings panned out after all their skill practice in workouts! There is always room for improvement in all skill areas, including throwing, catching, positive talk and listening skills. We practice it all. **Wear your colours to earn full points!**
