October 15-21, 2023 is America’s Safe Schools Week. This is a time where we highlight the extensive system of adults, structural elements, educational efforts, and protocols at HSD that work together to ensure our students, staff, and schools are as safe as possible.
One thing to highlight is the significant work that was done through our 2017 capital construction bond to bring every building to a consistent level of safety. Approximately $21.6 million has been invested in security infrastructure across the district. According to Public Safety Systems Specialist Fred Kuest, these investments made the Hillsboro School District, which is the fourth-largest district in the state, number one in physical security.
Each campus has a customized system that fits its individual needs and balances security requirements with the building’s unique workflow and learning environment. The bond projects included: physical infrastructure (fencing and gates, secure entry vestibules, window security film); security trio systems (access control, intrusion alarms, security cameras); and communication systems. Our structural assets are complemented and strengthened by our human assets (agency partnerships, responsible behavior, community vigilance).
Learn more about our safety and security bond work on pages 11-13 of the fall 2022 edition of A Look Inside Hillsboro Schools.
Learn more about all of the other ways we work to ensure safety, such as bullying prevention, threat assessments, partnerships with law enforcement, and much more, by visiting hsd.k12.or.us/keepingstudentssafe.

Farmington View Recognized as Gold Certified STEAM School
Farmington View Elementary School (FVES) was recently recognized as a Gold Certified STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) school by the Portland Metro STEM Partnership (PMSP). FVES has been a STEM-focused school for more than 10 years, and in the last two years has partnered with PMSP to not only refine their STEAM practices, but also to provide evidence of the great work they have been doing for years. PMSP has provided staff professional development and funding in order to improve programming at FVES, which includes after-school STEAM clubs such as Garden Club, and integrated STEAM lessons throughout the school day. According to Interim Principal Natasha Echeverria, “becoming a gold certified STEAM school was a process that took hard work and collaboration amongst staff, students, and families. There is still work to be done and Farmington View is excited to continue our relationship with the Portland Metro STEM Partnership.” Congratulations and way to go, Farmington View! You make us Proud to be HSD!

The emergence of yet another violent conflict - this time between Hamas and Israel - is likely to cause a range of emotions, questions, and confusion for our students. Because so much information, misinformation, disinformation, imagery, and videos are being shared via social media, it is important for educators and families to proactively engage students in discussions about how to navigate the situation. Resources were shared with all administrators and staff to support our schools on Monday, Oct. 9, and the Oregon Department of Education’s October 2023 Social Science Newsletter contains a wealth of information for educators and families that is broken down by grade level.
