Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year is a festival celebrated in China and other Asian countries that begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends on the first full moon of the lunar calendar, fifteen days later. It is a time for family gatherings, religious ceremonies honoring ancestors, dances, fireworks, red lanterns, traditional foods and gifts representing good luck and prosperity. Lunar New Year provides a great opportunity for students to learn about multicultural traditions and customs, geography, and history - all of which are part of Oregon’s Social Studies Standards. Sunday, Jan. 22 is Chinese New Year and ushers in the Year of the Rabbit.

First Annual Glencoe Toy Shoppe

On Saturday, Dec. 17 Glencoe High School’s lobby was transformed into a winter wonderland to welcome families in the Glencoe feeder group to the First Annual Glencoe Toy Shoppe. The long-time dream of Activities and Leadership Director Tom Stephens, the Toy Shoppe was brought to life by his dedicated students. It provided an opportunity for families who needed some extra assistance for the holidays an opportunity to come “shop” for toys and clothing for their children, and to receive a box of food. In addition to racks of donated new toys and a clothing corner, there was free hot cocoa and a wrapping station staffed by student volunteers. In all, approximately 120 families participated, representing more than 300 students. Over 100 bags of clothes, 140 boxes of food, and 700 toys were donated and “infinite memories were made,” notes Stephens. Way to go, GHS Leadership! Thank you for caring about our community and for your generosity of spirit. You make us proud to be HSD! See More Photos.
