Did you know that September 15 through October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month? The designation became law in 1988 and is intended to celebrate the long and important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans in North America, much of which is the result of the Mexican-American war. The treaty entered into between the U.S. and Mexico in 1848 gave the U.S. nearly one million square miles, including land in what is now Arizona, California, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah, in exchange for $15 million and the assumption of $3.25 million in debt claims against Mexico. Mexicans remaining on that land were granted American citizenship. Learn more at archives.gov.
