What's Happening at Hillsdale

Knights Families,

WOW! October came in HOT...pun very much intended.

Also hot--the Fall Choir concert that is next Thursday, October 10th in the Auditorium. Who wouldn't want to enjoy hearing the voices of the talented HHS choir singers.

Choir isn't the only part of our Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) that is in need of recognition. Hillsdale's production of Cabaret is coming soon--it's just a month away and tickets are already on sale (flyer with purchase details below).

Speaking of "sales", this week, HHS faculty was able to start requesting items from PTSO that help support them in their classrooms. In addition to that list, we are asking for Kleenex, hand sanitizer, and sanitizing wipes. Donations can be dropped at the office anytime with a note--"Attn: PTSO". Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Sunday October 6th is the last day to complete the Safe Routes to Schools Survey. This survey is confidential and helps the City of San Mateo know our thoughts about walking and biking to school. Safe Routes to Schools Survey

Jumping to the end of the month, we will be having our schoolwide A Knight 4 the Cure event. This is a community event where the proceeds are split amongst the 4 classes AND a breast cancer charity. We will be looking for volunteers AND food/item donations. PTSO also co-hosts a Pink Breakfast with Leadership for the Faculty and Staff on the day of the event, Friday October 25th. Sign Up Geniuses for BOTH events are coming this week!! If you or your business have specialty items/decor (pink donuts, cupcakes, custom cookies, pink swag) that you'd like to donate before the sign up is released, please reach out to us via email. Thank you for supporting.

On the topic of Pink and Breast Cancer Awareness, there will be free mammograms available, tomorrow at the Pink Patch Party hosted by the San Mateo Police Department. For more information and to sign up, click here or check out the flyer below.

Bringing the focus back to the coming week with Hillsdale's Pride Week. October is LGBTQIA+ History Month. Pride Week is yet another example of how our school supports all---and that everyone has a place here. There are spirited activities planned through the week, wrapping up with Coming Out Day on Friday.

Don't like your picture that you took for the yearbook or have yet to take it at all? Monday is picture retake day. Did we just mention yearbook?? Don't forget to make sure to purchase one a the deeply discounted rate currently offered.

Monday is our monthly Athletics Booster meeting which will be held in person and virtually--all are welcome! Attend and learn more about how athletics at HHS works.

Junior and Senior Families, registration is now open for the District-wide College Fair that will take place at Aragon this year. This is an annual SMUHSD event where 75+ college representatives will be in attendance and there will also be presentations about paying for college, plus more. For more information, including a list of participating colleges/universities, click here

Don't forget to scroll through the bulletin for flyers, information, and attachments that could apply to YOU!

Have a hopefully cooler weekend!

Did you know that Hillsdale's Houses are a nationally recognized, award-winning program? Our Small Learning Communities are what make Hillsdale special and unique.

Our House system is essential, and it's an expensive program to run. That is why HHSF needs to raise $600,000 this year to pay the additional teacher salaries that district funding does not cover. We need your help!

Please consider contributing to the Foundation, either one-time or monthly. If you have already given, we deeply appreciate your support. Thank you!

Donations for Pride Week

Hello Hillsdale Families!

Are you interested in contributing specific items or donations to Hillsdale High School’s Gender and Sexualities Alliance (GSA)? Your donation would help support GSA-sponsored events such as Pride Week (October 7-11), movie nights, and field trips.

If you are interested in donating food sale items, look for sign-ups here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0A4EADAF28ABF9C70-51677167-gsapride#/n

The supplies we will be using for our food sales are:

  • Costco chocolate chip cookies
  • Chips flavor pack
  • Costco candy assorted

If you are interested in contributing to club funds please send cash or checks (made out to Hillsdale High School with “GSA” in the memo line) to the Front Office, where we will have a box to receive donations. Please read the following information as to how your donation is being used for good.

  • GSA has an annual tradition of celebrating national Coming Out Day as a way to recognize and empower our LGBTQ+ identifying students and staff. We create curriculum for every advisory, host food fairs, lunch craft activities, and on Friday, our celebration of coming out.
  • Our movie nights are held once per semester and are a means of fostering community outside of the classroom. During this time, all students are invited to join us for a movie surrounding an LGBTQ+ topic, and eat popcorn and delicious pizza.
  • Our field trip to the Castro neighborhood is a long standing tradition where all students celebrate the end of the year by taking a walking tour and exploring the Castro to learn about its rich culture and historical significance to the LGBTQ+ community.

Stanford Sleep Study

Are you a teen with a desire to go to bed earlier, or the parent of a teen?

We are conducting a study to determine whether a novel behavioral and light intervention can help you go to bed earlier. The study is 10 weeks in the Fall and another 10 weeks in the Winter. During the first part of the study, you will receive information about sleep in a series of short videos. You’ll also be given a special light that you will keep in your room that will help you get to sleep earlier. The light works automatically while you are sleeping and will be used throughout the study. Participation is completely voluntary, and you will be compensated ($500) for your time.

If you are interested in participating, you can click here to determine your eligibility or visit our website for more information. If you have any questions, you can contact the Research Coordinator at denizkes@stanford.edu or 650-732-6823.

For complaints, concerns, or participant's rights, contact 1-866-680-2906.

Hillsdale Peace Pantry ~ Community Garden ~ Community Closet

October 2024

"Empathy is the starting point for creating a community and taking action. It's the impetus for creating change." - Max Carver

Hillsdale Community,

We hope this finds you well as Fall is officially upon us. We continue to be humbled by the dedication and commitment of our student and adult volunteers at our Peace Pantry, Community Garden and Community Closet. Looking back, September was a critical month as we continue our Hillsdale Community work. On September 26th, our Garden Team, harvested 100 pounds of organic fruits and vegetables which put our 2024 YTD total at 1,535.93 pounds. This 2024 total surpassed our 2023 YTD total of 1,507.5 pounds and our harvest will continue into October and November. We received good news in September that we were awarded a $19,500 Measure K Grant to help sustain our Peace Pantry, Community Closet and Community Garden efforts. However, what felt most inspiring and hopeful in September were all of the new student and adult volunteers who continue to make this volunteer work feel sustainable!

Hillsdale Stands Together!

Peace Pantry

If you would like to volunteer at our Peace Pantry this Friday OR in October please sign up here. Our volunteer team meets in the Alameda Parking Lot every Friday morning at 7:30am to provide weekly groceries and essential items to families. Volunteers can sign up to work the Emergency Food Drive Thru or volunteer to deliver groceries to 3-4 Hillsdale families who do not have transportation. No experience required. *New: We will soon shift to a Farmer’s Market model and we will need additional volunteers to support these efforts.

Community Garden

If you are interested in joining our Community Garden Team please email bstevenson@smuhsd.org to learn more. We currently need Thursday harvest support from 3:30pm-5:00pm. All you need to do is show up. No experience required. Our Community Garden Team is currently producing over 100 pounds of organic fruits and vegetables each week which directly supports Hillsdale families enrolled in our Peace Pantry. *Please follow us on Instagram, @hhs_community_garden, for updates. *We need additional support in October putting a fresh layer of wood chips down to help prepare our garden for rain and winter.

Community Closet

Our Community Closet Team is working hard on our Community Closet expansion project. Soon, students will be able to access a well designed space to shop for clothes and essential items. Our volunteer team is currently in need of (ONLY) men’s (high school age) jeans, Hillsdale gear/swag, new socks, new undershirts and essential items. We can accept donations every Wednesday from 2:45pm-4:00pm OR Friday mornings from 7:30am-8:30am in the Alameda Parking Lot. *Please follow us on Instagram @hhs_community_closet

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

During National Disability Employment Awareness Month, or NDEAM, we celebrate the value and talent workers with disabilities add to America’s workplaces and economy. NDEAM takes place annually each October, but its purpose is to confirm our commitment to ensuring disabled workers have access to good jobs, every month of every year. That’s the spirit behind this year’s official theme: “Access to Good Jobs for All.”

October is LGBTQIA+ History Month

LGBTQIA+ History Month has been identified to remind all cultures within our wider community of the important roles LGBTQIA+ people have taken in shaping the social, cultural, historical, legal, and political worlds we live in today.

SMUHSD appreciates and recognizes the importance of LGBTQIA+ History Month as an effective means of educating and calling to action our community members to work together by fighting prejudice and discrimination in their own lives.

Increasing visibility, raising awareness, and teaching LGBTQIA+ history fosters a welcoming school climate where LGBTQIA+ students, families, and educators can live their authentic lives and be treated with dignity and respect.

SMUHSD’s LGBTQIA+ History Month Proclamation serves as a call to action for educators, students and community members to find tangible ways to understand and honor the LGBTQIA+ community during LGBTQIA+ History Month and all year long.

Read the proclamation in Spanish: www.smuhsd.org/proclamations

October is National Filipino American History Month

In 2009, U.S. Congress recognized October as Filipino American History Month in the United States. SMUHSD recognizes that efforts must continue to promote the study of Filipino American history and culture, so mandated in the mission statement of the Filipino American National Historical Society, because the role of Filipino Americans and those of other People of Color have been neglected in the writings, teachings and learnings of United States History. It is imperative for Filipino American youth to have positive role models and to instill in them the importance of education, complemented with the richness of their ethnicity and the values of their legacy.

SMUHSD has an important role to commit to educating students and the larger community about the history, traditions, and diversity of the Filipino American community
