What's Happening at Hillsdale

Knights Families,

We hope you are all enjoying the week off school! In the spirit of last week, we wanted to highlight two more of our booster groups since we are not at school this week.

DRAMA

Our drama program puts on two productions a year -one in the fall and another in the early spring. Hillsdale has beginning and advanced drama classes that fulfill the "CTE/VAPA credit". The program also includes a student Drama Club and HIIT (improv) Squad. We are proud to say that the drama program is stronger than ever and are looking forward to seeing future productions.

Have a student who is interested in drama? Click here or have them contact their advisor/counselor

MUSIC

Our music program has multiple events throughout the year. There are Winter, Spring, and Pops Concert series in which there are choral and instrumental performances. We are so proud of the many talented musicians at Hillsdale and welcome those who are interested to learn more about our programs. Music classes, band, ensemble, etc count for the VAPA credit.

Now Accepting Applications for Our Board of Directors!

Dear HHS families,

HHSF wants YOU! Hillsdale High School Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that raises funds for our Small Learning Communities program (AKA our House system). HHSF's mission is to sustain this excellent, internationally-recognized program, which costs more to run than district funding provides.

HHSF consists of an Executive Director and 11 active board members, plus ad-hoc committees. The board is comprised of parents, alumni, faculty, and staff who contribute a wide range of expertise. We meet every 2 months on campus. This is a great opportunity to get involved, make a positive impact on our school and community, and make your voice heard! Please email Marcine Jansen at execdirector@hillsdalehsfoundation.org with any questions.

Youth Heart Screening Sign up link

Youth Heart Screenings Save Lives!

1 in 300 youth has an undetected heart condition that puts them at risk for Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). The current standard approach to health history and annual physical examinations misses about 90% of at-risk youth. Early detection of heart abnormalities, which often go undetected until a traumatic cardiac event, can save lives.

HHS Peace Pantry ~ Community Garden ~ Community Closet

April

“We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say, ‘It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.” Fred Rogers

April 2, 2025

Hillsdale Community,

Spring is officially here which means our Community Garden will begin our third planting season. Launched in April of 2022, our garden has produced close to 4,000 pounds of organic fruits and vegetables which we distribute to HHS families at our weekly Peace Pantry. Please join us on April 19th (8:30am-12:30pm) at the garden for our official garden day as we plant seedlings in our 30 raised beds and break ground on phase three of our garden expansion project. If you simply wish to learn more about our community garden, stop by for Open House from 9:00am-10:30am on April 19. Our Harvest Goal this year is 2,500 pounds of organic produce.

A special thank you to Supervisor Corzo for a Measure K Grant which has allowed us to expand our garden and add the necessary infrastructure to shift our Peace Pantry to a Farmers Market model. A big thank you to our amazing partners at Each Green Corner and Second Harvest Food Bank for their continued support! Last but not least, we could not sustain our work in the garden without the generous donations of so many members of our community who donated during our Holiday Giving Campaign in December.

April also marks the Grand Opening of our newest Community Closet. Thanks to the vision, wisdom and tireless effort of our Community Closet Leadership Team of Lauryn Matsumoto, Sam Rank, Phoebe Lin, Lila Corkish, Alva Sunil, Alyssa Morimoto, Jackie Garcia, Matt Kay, Marc Schellenberg and Greg Thornhill, we now have a Community Closet that creates a true shopping experience for students in a well designed space. A special thank you to our district electricians for installing lighting and power in both closets. Our Community Closet is kicking off our Back to School Clothing Drive April 21-May 21. Please join us on April 19 (9:00am-10:30am) for our Community Closet Open House in the Alameda parking Lot. Once again, our newest Community Closet would not have been possible without the generous support of all of the Hillsdale community members who offered financial support during our Holiday Giving Campaign. We would also like to thank the San Mateo Assistance League for their generous financial support.

Finally, our Peace Pantry is another great opportunity for folks in the community to begin volunteering. Our volunteer team meets each Friday morning in the Alameda Parking Lot and provides weekly groceries and essential items to 150 families who experience food insecurity due to the high cost of living in San Mateo and Foster City. If you have thought about taking that next step to learn more about our Peace Pantry, please sign up below for a volunteer shift or simply stop by. Our volunteer team (see testimonials below) is a group that includes HHS parents, alumni parents, neighbors, staff and students. . .and we have donuts!
