Here's The Latest From HES!

Executive Function Coaching

Now that school is off and running, it is important for students to have a plan when it comes to completing schoolwork at home. A successful approach starts with designating a quiet, consistent space in the house for homework and establishing a routine for when that work should be completed. The good news is that teachers are more sensitive than ever to the demands being placed on students at home, and homework has been reduced significantly over the past decade. Even more importantly, teachers are increasingly using homework to formatively assess student progress and/or advance the curriculum, rather than simply assigning it as busy work.

At Hilltop Educational Services (HES), we work with students to develop the organizational skills, time-management skills, and task-initiation strategies they need to successfully manage the demands of schoolwork—both in and out of the classroom.

Educational Advocacy

It is important to consider when you may need an educational advocate for your child. Here are a few examples to consider:

  • Your child is being evaluated for special education for the first time.
  • You aren't sure whether your child qualifies for an IEP or a 504 Plan.
  • You have concerns that your child's current supports aren't working.
  • You feel overwhelmed during IEP or 504 meetings.
  • You're struggling to understand testing results or educational reports.
  • Communication with the school has become difficult.
  • You're preparing for a major transition, such as changing schools or moving from high school to college.

HES has staff with extensive experience in the development and implementation of 504 Plans and IEPs, providing parents and students with knowledgeable support throughout the process.

PSAT/SAT Prep

This is a busy time of year on the standardized testing front! The PSAT/NMSQT will be administered to 11th graders throughout the country this month, and there are two more SAT administrations before 2026 comes to an end: November 7 and December 5. HES offers two PSAT/SAT preparation packages designed to meet the needs of students: an Intensive program, lasting 5–6 weeks, and a Traditional program, lasting 10–12 weeks. Don’t miss out on what HES has to offer when it comes to PSAT/SAT preparation!

College Counseling

As mentioned in the last newsletter, fall is a busy time on the college admissions front! 12th graders looking to apply Early Action (EA) or Early Decision (ED) should be finalizing their list of potential schools and completing the Common Application and/or individual college applications. Admission deadlines begin as early as October 15, so now is the time to make sure everything is in order! 11th graders should begin researching colleges of interest while also preparing for the aforementioned PSAT/NMSQT. Admission representatives from colleges and universities will be visiting high schools throughout the month of October, so be sure to pay attention to announcements from your School Counseling Office and take advantage of these opportunities to learn more about different schools. At HES, students receive personalized guidance on course scheduling, standardized testing, all facets of the college application process, and financial implications—including federal aid, scholarship strategies, and loan planning

Fall Reminders

-Now that we are 5–6 weeks into the school year, make sure you are regularly accessing your child’s Student Information System (SIS) to monitor grades, assignments, attendance, and overall academic progress.

-High school students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses should be on the lookout for information regarding AP exam registration. Although AP exams are administered in May, schools typically begin the registration and ordering process around this time of year.

-The next administration of the SAT is November 3, with a registration deadline of October 23. Registration must be completed through the College Board website.

-The FAFSA and CSS Profile have been available since October 1st. Parents of seniors should determine which colleges require only the FAFSA (typically public schools) and which require both the FAFSA and CSS Profile (typically private schools).
